Hello everybody!

We have big news to share with you today: Amplitude is going indie again!

Our journey with SEGA over the last 8 years has been amazing, and we have learned so much working with them, but now we are returning to our roots as an independent studio. With ownership of the studio returning to some of our original founders and members of the team, the creative vision of our games and the Endless universe rests in the hands of those who know them best. While we are going our separate ways now, we part on good terms and wish our friends at SEGA the best for all their future projects.

Back to Our Roots

In the words of our founder Romain de Waubert de Genlis:

Our studio is backed by strong and meaningful franchises and our team is committed to creating the best games possible. With our extensive experiences in strategy game development and two exciting titles currently in progress, we are confident in our ability to deliver outstanding experience to players. This decision allows us to be more agile in our approach while continuing to shape the vision that has been ours from the very beginning, empowering us to push boundaries and be closer as ever of our community.

Working closely with our players has always been at the heart of our philosophy, and this will continue to shape our approach in the future. We could not have made these games and this universe without the support of our wonderful community. Thank all of you for your continued support!

We’ve got a new Humankind patch soon, but we’ll share more details about that next week, and we will talk more about what we have in store at Amplified next January, so remember to join us for our anniversary.

So, here’s to the future of Amplitude, our amazing community, and the Endless universe!

Interesting direction for the studio to take, I hope it ends up working out for everyone. I've no idea how all of these decisions would pan out, or what constitutes a 'good' direction, but it feels like one to me, if nothing else?

Hopeful about the upcoming HUMANKIND news, really happy to hear about that. Looking forward to testing, or helping out, how I can with feedback and so on, too, so it can be just right!

I wonder what bearing this will have going forward. Will Amplitude still have Sega as a Publisher, or go full solo?

Hopefully this is a return to form for you guys. Bringing the studio back to the days when EL and ES2 were bring made sounds incredibly promising.

Best of luck!

OMG! I can hardly believe it. Does this mean we’re FINALLY getting rid of Denuvo?

After being very disappointed in Amplitude last year, this move gives me hope again that the time is coming back when I had the most fun with Amplitude games (ES1, DotE, EL).

And two new games are in the works? Please tell me one of them is Endless Legend 2!

I 100% agree with this move.  To be honest, something has just felt "off" since you partnered with Sega.  Not necessarily anything against Sega personally, but it feels like Sega's vision for Amplitude and Amplitude's vision for themselves were not in alignment.  Best wishes as you pursue new endeavors.

I really hope this pans out for you guys, I'm sure taking a step like this comes with enormous risk. I'm very excited to see what the future holds and I wish you all the best in this new endevour!

Very exciting. I was worried about Sega's influence on Endless Dungeon. It felt like a bunch of "Safe Business Decisions" and not a lot of love.
I'm thrilled to hear Amplitude has enough love left in it to break off and try to create another beautiful passion project!
Support to everyone on the team! It takes courage, and I hope your passion shines through to bring us another masterpiece!

Phenomenal news!

I'm looking forward to seeing Amplitude return to its marvelous roots.  I believe the strong creative vision has always been a pillar of your games.  I look forward to supporting you in the future, a brighter future without the overhead that has hampered past projects.

That's the best news of the year !!! Sorry to say that, but it comes from the bottom of my heart, your games were less good under Sega's direction.

Hyenas

If I remember well, you justified your move to the big SEGA family with financial stability reasons.

How secure are you financially now to enable getting back from the future? That's the key question.

From a revenue perspective, you can count on me to continue buying your excellent products... but I am just a drop in the ocean of course...

I think this is very good news. I am thrilled to see you guys going back to your roots, those roots that created the awesome games that this community loves so much. With less contractual responsibilities and more creative freedoms, I think you guys are going to be able to create great things. I wish you the best future possible. Much love.

Not gonna lie, was expecting something like that brewing in the background.

And two new projects? Woof, I hope the HK patch will be meaty, because that's likely a farewell to the game, then, no? All in all, best of luck, for all hands on deck, Amplitude is full of beautiful people, who were always a joy to meet on streams and wherever else we got to interact.

Glad to see a humankind patch is in the works, idk if it has been said, but since Civ 7 is taking a few ideas from Humankind, is there any plans for amplitude to breath some life into this game with maybe some additional mechanics? Maybe revamp ocean play a bit?

Do you have enough money, manpower, skill and experience to make a better game than before? That's my only concern.

Where is my new Endless series? Legend and Space are fine.

That's great! Indie indeed seems to be the way...
On a side note, would this turn of events mean we have a chance of seeing Endless Legend and Humankind on GOG?
I'd love to get the former there...

ES2 was likely mostly done before the Sega buyout.
It was the last game made worth playing if you ignore the last couple of DLCs.
What on earth did Sega have the studio doing for almost a decade; supporting CA and working on Hyenas?

Well, DotE and Endless Space games are DRM free on GOG... So there's that, at least.

Ok, but since Humankind and most endless titles are owned by SEGA, how is that going to work on future updates and projects?

Not sure it is a good news actually. It reminds me of Hairbrained Schemes.. hopefully it will turn into a good thing !

What about the intellectual properties ? Endless games licences are still owned by Amplitude or do they belong to Sega now ?

Indie studios always have greater creative freedom, and that's absolutely AMAZING! Amplitude have such great creative direction and rock-solid IP's! I'm really happy and excited with the news! Looking forward for the Humankind update and also expecting news on the Endless Space universe.

Guys, I wish you all the best in your endeavours. I truly believe you can create a masterpiece that'll surpass EL. ES2 should also be your source of inspiration. It was rough at the edges, but was brimming with promising ideas for those who enjoy clever games. Don't oversimplify your games, respect your fans, create great titles with our support and love and your skill and ability - and all will be well!

GOG is my choice when it comes to games nowadays.

Focus on Humankind and Endless Space and I'm happy.

Traditional Civ 4X and a Space 4X should be the focus.

Run both games in parallell life cycles with expansion, that way I can jump back and forth supporting both games.

I'am happy to see that SEGA gives you back your freedom instead of closing the studio, just like too many mainstream editors do nowadays. I'm looking forward to knowing what's next.

I hope that there is a little place for Endless Dungeons in those plans. I enjoyed playing to it. I derserves better consideration from players.

Late to the party, but incredibly excited to hear this news.

I've been with you since the very beginning, and I must say, the SEGA years were a massive lose of faith for me; I hope you're able to find your roots once more.

Original art, original stories, incredible soundtracks, an expansive universe of games with underlying themes that stretch across the worlds: flavor, love, and dedication.

This is very interesting news indeed!  This studio started as an interesting experiment of inserting the player base into the design (and a bit of development).  I will be watching with anticipation to see if this means a return to past behavior.  As an old fan I know that repeating past success can be difficult but I have hopes this crew can do it. Over the last 8 years, and many prior, I have no doubt many lessons have been learned. I am curious to see what conclusions will come from those many lessons and how they will be implemented in this new/old indie style.

To all the Amplitude Teams, show us your stuff, the future of the ES universe and those media connected to it all rest on you now.  You have lots of good positive and hopeful messages here so show us what you can do!  Best of luck and lots of encouragement from this old gamer!

It's always this with Amplitude. Just admit that Sega wanted more than you could deliver and you abandoned ES2 at the time because you had an illusion of grandeur with Humankind. To say it's back to the roots as a choice feels as a simple lie, just like the nevercoming patch or the ongoing struggle with forces outside of your control.

You have let me down the hardest of all in my 40 years of playing games.

This is not a small matter.

You left Es2 to rot. And now you ask for our respect on the side.

Mine you have to earn again by hard work.

Bring back ES2 back to life. This game has everything to compete against Stellaris. Add content, work on the IA and we will all jump back to it.
