No custom factions in the alpha?

I can't find any option to create my own faction in the game. Does this mean that custom factions won't be possible until in later versions?

Well you can choose different starting factions (with different traits). I counted FIVE. Actually started one game in a huge galaxy (btw, no performance problem) with an evil race and had immediately a different ship design for my colonizer.

But I did not find a way to choose traits myself (like creating a custom race).

The goal of an alpha is to know if it's stable. So adding bug-inducing features like custom faction isn't a good thing.

What all of you guys will see is the game becoming built around you. It would not be much of G2G-experience if everything was implemented already would it?
