Just a thought but i'm getting the impression that there is not a distinctly 'desireable' final terraforming option?

I was terraforming constanly until I realised that I was just terraforming the same planets over and over smiley: smile

It's not one size fits all as in Moo?

Yeah, terraforming seems rather useless in this game until you unlock the advanced options. Making lava planets just doesnt provide enough of a boost to justify the industry and "happiness" hit etc

Well, Lava is better for production, so if you have a large planet with a good anomaly, it might be worthwhile to transform it into Lava. The same with Arid and Dust and Tundra(or arctic?) and Research.

There is also something about being an evil empire and turning every planet you can into a hellhole of molten rock...

Optimizing your planetary systems to the maximum effect would probably leave at least one habitable planet to produce food and for an industrial system the rest would be converted to lava, to get as much industry as possible.

For maximum science a barren planet system would probably be best.

For dust a few desert planets, perhaps?

I actually find terraforming incredably useful for developing systems dedicated to specific purposes. There is no perfect planet type. but there are a few that are best for certain focuses. Lava is great early on for maximizing production for a shipyard system, end game the jungle is superior though because of it's better all around stats and its much greater population capacity. Arctic planets are great for a science focused system, and I'm sure there is one that is best for maxing dust production as well.

EDIT: After a quick look in game Jungles are definitely the best for production and Oceans are almost certainly the best for Research. Even though neither of them get the best benefits from improvements(in some cases no benefit at all) their massive populations and good base and exploitation bonuses give them a definite edge over all other planet types.

You done your homework. I came to the same conclusion myself.

I really love to be able to shape the planets how I want them to be.

The differences between planets are really well thought out.

Yeah it's really nice although i'd like to see a state of flux between terraforming cycles rather than just *bing* lava *bing* barren smiley: smile

It would be good if over a few turns you could see the planet actually changing. For instance a barren planet could slowly start to become greener until it is fully terraformed into a terran planet. An arctic planet having the ice melted and becoming oceans and then the oceans disappearing as it becomes a lava planet ect, but this would probably be a lot of work.

I'd settle for a planet shrouded in cloud with the odd lightning storm on the surface while its being terraformed smiley: smile
