I think that Humankind could greatly benefit from having a minimap as well as different display modes for the world map. This was implemented quite well in, for example, Crusader Kings 2. When you look at the world in Realm it shows you all of the Realms in the world like this:

But you can switch the map to many other modes such as Economy which looks like this:

This is controlled by a set of buttons built into the minimap:

I think that Humankind could greatly benefit from such features. There is a lot of geographic information which could be presented by such modes allowing the player to analyze the terrain of the world. This is not only helpful but frankly very fun. It feels very strategic being able to look at the whole world and switch between different information presentations as you make plans on what to do with your country next. As it stands with no minimap at all I feel lost as I don't immediately have a reference of where I am looking, even if I am looking at my own capitol.

Here is an example of the game in normal view with a minimap:

And here is an example of the game in resource view mode:

In my resource view the whole world is painted colors according to the resources that are present. Light colors indicate land with no extension, whereas dark colors indicate land which has been build upon. So you can easily see light green areas which could potentially be good for farmer's quarters, light orange areas which could be good for maker's quarters, and you could put commons quarters on the border between them. This way the commons quarters can be surrounded by extensions on all sides, but the extensions around it are surrounded by the appropriate type. This would be very helpful to have.

I also dislike that when you zoom out it forces you into this territory view automatically:

Although that view can be useful, when I zoom out I would prefer that it stays in regular view until I manually switch it to that.

Some map view modes which might be helpful are:

Default - how the game looks now.
Resources - as above.
Nations - colors all territories according to who owns them be it a player, an independent city state, or unclaimed. Also displays barbarian / wild animal spawn locations.

Combat - grays out the whole world except military information. Units are red, and where they can move to is darker. Defensive Structures are dark red. The fog of war is more clearly defined. Battle areas are highlighted. Slopes, high ground, rivers, forest and other tactical terrain features are displayed more plainly.
Influence - I understand there is some cultural influence system in the game for territories, but I don't know what.

Religion, trade, tourism, unrest, espionage might also potentially have map modes depending on if and how they are implemented in the game.

Additionally if you zoom out far enough parts of the UI such as the minimap can automatically hide them self.

Really necessary feature here. I also missed it when playing the Opendev. I thought the absence of it was due to WIP status because the minimap is so commonsense that I would be really surprised if the devs decided to not include it in the game...

I consider too, that modmap are necessary. CK2, EU4 are very good example indeed. Paradox has really succeed in this topic and we can hope that Amplitude can add these features with both some nice artistic choice and a clear understanding of the maps.
