Hi everyone,

Hot on the heels of the release of our Lost Symphony content pack for Endless Space 2, we figured it was time for a new installment of Quality Time, With Jeff, this time focused on the music of the Endless games.

For this evening's fireside chat, we are joined by our talented composer Arnaud Roy (better known as FlybyNo) for a deep dive into the inspirations and methodology behind the award-winning soundtracks and sound design that we have come to know and love. Ever noticed that there are string instruments in Endless Legend but none in Endless Space? Ever wondered why? And how do we go about making the music interactive? The answers to these questions and many more await...

As always, we love to hear your feedback, questions, comments, critiques (and hey, compliments, why not) so don't be shy!

Stay warm, fellow Aurigans, and we'll see you soon for more Quality Time.

What a universe, vast and subtil and just for the music part...
Congratulations Arnaud !! And congrats too for every participant in the process.
I'm particulary impressed

NB : I wonder why the french part is translated in english but the english is not in french ... ?
Do you consider French langage as garbage and french players less than nothing ?
That's pretty funny to see that the French participant in all those videos are asked and able to speak in English but the Englishmen are just incompetent  in the Amplitude Studios language.

I'm (still) so happy, you did introduce 5.1 sound (who was this genious asking for? ).

;)

Very sad, that it wasn't in case of Endless Legend. The music is so amazing, may FlyByNo have a long, healthy and prosperous life.

On a side note, and related to the little touches that make all the difference, watching Jeff play with the toys in the videos makes me want to know what his work and "play" spaces look like :)  It also reminds me of times I clean up my kids toys after they've gone to bed and I inevitably start playing and making believe.  Never grow up, just get more mature until you realize the value of being a kid.

It's just a tiiiiny bit less dramatic.

While he understands it perfectly, Arnaud is a lot more at ease with a harpsichord than with the English language. While most of our French players understand English, very few of our non-French native players understand French, so it makes sense that we would make sure that they understand it. In the future, we hope to bring these videos in multiple languages (with subtitles), but this is a non-trivial amount of work, and it has to be done for each video, so it's a task that we can't quite handle on our own.

Now something for the devs: would it be possible to display the title of the song currently playing somewhere in the GUI? This would be really great.

And if it's not asking for too much, could it be possible to click on it, display the list of tracks and allow us to select a different one?

Some of this miiiight be within the realm of possibilities. Make sure you shoot it as an idea and link it here!

I'm trying to learn french and you guys always speak those articles so fast it's nearly impossible to understand.

Besides do you have to cut the articles? I mean l'emploi instead of le emploi. Can't you just use the le instead of always using the apostrophs? In english you can also say can not instead of nac't.

This might be relevant (and it's in French so it'll make you practice!): http://www.aidenet.eu/grammaire01b.htm

Thanks for secretly fixing the surround sountracks in the deluxe and lost symphony on march 21. FYI right channel audio was coming from the the center channel before, even though ironically they said in the readme for that soundtrack that there is no center channel.

FlyByNo is pure magic!

I listen to the soundtracks on Spotify very frequently. He definitely achieved everything he mentioned in the video. What a brilliant mind in music! Each piece of music in each soundtrack is so unique and powerful. And with this video I realised an even further depth to his work. Thanks for having him!

Beautiful music, the best of any games I've ever played. Amplitude studios certainly outdoes itself with these soundtracks.

That line of Arnaud's about letting the music in EL 'breathe' really struck a chord; one of the aspects of that game that I always found excellent was how atmospheric it was... the sounds of the world helped draw you in, and complimented the music nicely.

What I'm wondering why we can't integrate other soundtracks from other games of Amplitude games. Such as Dungeon of the Endless soundtrack would be fit into Endless Space 2 with all that effects when we go through different menus If we have the soundtrack for DotE. Maybe a tool or an arrangement could have been done.

After watching the live performance, I was a little bit afraid the new tracks would not fit very well with the old ones, but after hearing these in game I have to say the integration is absolutely beautiful and all tracks now appear as only one (master)piece! Congratulations Arnaud and to the people working with you, sometimes I just stop playing just to listen to your beautiful creations! ;-)

Now something for the devs: would it be possible to display the title of the song currently playing somewhere in the GUI? This would be really great.

Well, whether you can do it or not, thanks a lot for your beautiful work Arnaud!

It's a true sign of the quality of the music that even though amplitude has grown massively since ES1 FlybyNo is still the one producing the amazing music.

A Question, is Jeff’s vast art collection gained in a daring heist on the amoebas great underwater gallery or have they been donated by him to the gallery?

Thank you for this – it is good to see Amplitude recognize the subtle significance of its music and how it helps shape the identity of the Endless universe.

Endless game have some of the best OSTs I've ever experienced in gaming – Fly-by-No is a genius and his work is absolutely phenomenal.

Each time is better than the last!  I love the deliberate attention paid to the music and it's interaction with the player.  Hearing Arnaud describe quickly how he conciously created variations of music for being in and out of menus just goes to show the incredible attention to detail paid to his craft and his creation.  (I hope this translation is close, thanks Google)  Superbe artisanat menant à l'excellence dans l'art. Merci beaucoup, Arnaud, d'avoir partagé cette vision avec nous!
