Do ignored heroes still block?

If you encounter a hero to recruit, and you decide to ignore them, will they still block monsters from spawning in that room? I noticed they seem to still help defend/ shoot enemies, but wasn't sure if they also block them from spawning.

You can test this yourself by going in & out of the room and seeing if there's a change in the light, or it shows up as a grid-like texture on the tactical map. No, they won't stop them from spawning, but they'll attack them and distract them from moving forward.
