Game not utilizing GPU (properly)

At some point during my game, at the start of a turn, the fps drops to only a couple frames per second where I previously had a smooth feeling (60 fps vsync 1:1).

I have one NVidia GeForce GTX 770 and my cpu is an AMD FX-6100 3.31 GHz so there shouldn't be a problem really as far as the gearcheck goes.

It's in the winter season at turn 170 when it all goes bad, but the previous turn 169 is already in the winter season and runs absolutely fine. When I hit end turn it starts tanking a bit, and though that's partly usual when the AI starts doing stuff, but it goes all the way down to almost no fps when it's "my turn" at turn 170. This happens every time I load up this savegame at 169 (savefile included down below).

I haven't explored that much really, it's 6 players (5 AI) on an 8 player map and all the way zoomed out i've not explored over half the screen.

The curious part is that, when i load the turn 170 save file, it starts off smooth for about 3 seconds and properly uses the GPU, but as the terrain is loading and rendering more textures, at some point it seems like some kind of threshold is hit or something, and the clock rates of my graphics card tank from 1110.5/1752.8 (core/mem) all the way down  to 135/162. (sidenote: the vidram usage never exceeds 900mb really, stating this because i read other posts here where 1G+ was an issue for some people).

There's not much I can seem to fix with tweaking, be it turning down all the graphics options in the game, or even going into nvidia's control panel and change settings for this game specifically.

Now here's the kicker: have no other graphics chips present in my build. My motherboard is a Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 so there is no way that my system magically switches to a different hardware graphics processor.

Because of how badly it performs, I don't feel like trying to push on in this game. I recently bought all DLC's and expansion packs and I'd really like to continue this save soon because I'm still really hyped about the expansion sets and this save has been going great for me so far. I really hope you guys can help me out here.

Here's some more specs if this helps:

Windows 7 64bit SP1 (yes the game is running 64 bit, it says so in the bottom left at the main menu)

Game version is 1.5.1 S3 with all DLC/expansions/update active and running (and all active for this specific savegame too)

My screen resolution is 2 X 1920x1080 at 60 Hz, so yeah 2 monitors, game running on the main screen which is the left  one, both connected to the one graphics card i have (the GTX 770)

Minor update: when in turn 170 there i hit the big end turn button, it just keeps on computing forever, never letting me into turn 171. So this savegame really does seem borked.

Aside from the never ending "computing turn 170" part, It doesn't seem like there's a bottleneck anywhere else neither during my own turn 170 before hitting the end turn button. Checking disk and cpu usage, nothing hits 100% anywhere, only one cpu gets itself above 80%, and disk usage isn't anywhere near worth mentioning.

I hope this savegame can be analyzed to help prevent this scenario happening in the future. I suppose I'm willing to accept that this savegame is unsalvagable if anyone from the tech support team comes out and says so. But I'd really like to know and like, be up to date about whenever this gets fixed so the game can't work itself into this perdicament. That would help me feel safer in playing this game without having to worry whether I'm putting al this time (and money i guess) into a match for nothing as i might end up at this same point again.

I don't mean to bump but it's been over a month since I've posted this issue. Is anybody looking at this? At least some verification that your studio registered the issue or something would be nice.

Apologies, sometimes threads fall in the cracks, and with most of our resources being allocated to Endless Space 2 at the moment, we tend to miss more things elsewhere.

I was able to load your save on my computer, hit turn 171, and forward until 175 (at which point I thought it safe to conclude that turns weren't stuck).

I also got very poor frame rate almost immediately after loading, but I believe a save on turn 171 on such a big map (were you playing on Huge?) might offer degraded performance (although this seems excessively low). I'll pass it on for investigation and get back to you if I hear anything.

In the meantime, perhaps you could try playing on this save from three turns after the one you were stuck on? Hopefully this circumvents the roadblock you were hitting.

Well I loaded up your turn 172 savegame but it seems to yield me the exact same results as when i start turn 170. As soon as it's loaded and the world starts to show on the screen, it just tanks down to the unbearable fps level. And the end turn button still doesn't ever seem to end for me neither, just like in my original situation

I agree it's a big map but as you say, the performance seems excessively low. On turn 169 the performance seems perfectly fine to me, it's not something that gradually krept up on the game as I ended more turns.

Do you still have the degraded performance going on after ending some turns?

Edit: sorry there, I got so into checking out the savefile you supplied I forgot to say thank you. Thanks for helping me on this and putting effort into figuring out whats going on.
