"Couldn't switch to requested monitor resolution" Error on Start

It's followed by many lines of text saying something like

Failed to switch to resolution XXX x XXX, trying lower one

where XXX x XXX is the resolution set in the xml-file in the game folder (the one in users/documents/... never was created by the point the game crashes) or in the registry (registry seems to take precedence), but in each following line, its a lower resolution.

I first thought this was caused by me trying to run the game through wine (on Linux), but many people reported it working flawlessly in wine, and I found this error pop up for regular windows users as well - it seems to be kind of rare, though.

Googling even more, I found the exact same error is present in a couple of other totally unconnected Unity-based games as well, so it seems it's caused by a Unity bug. Many of the affected people seemed to have dual-monitor setups (which I don't) or another application running that blocked something (which I kind of doubt being the case for me - besides, I could run the game in question without this error).

I can start Endless Legend without this problem (and the startup-behaviour of both games otherwise looks kinda alike to me...) using the exact same settings.

Does anybody know (or at least suspect) any other possible issues?

I didn't find any crashlogs - where would those be?

I do have a switch connected ( 2 computers sharing 1 monitor+keyboard+mouse), but I really doubt that's the issue.

Daevin - I too have this issue. The Registry file isn't where it says it should be and the one that sits in the SteamApps/ES folder doesn't specify any resolutions. I tried re-installing the C++ Distributable as suggested by Steph and rebooting but to no avail. I get the same error message as you, but I can only see it after I start up Task manager.

I run 2 monitors, Win7(64) and brand new Radeon video card.

I see you posted two weeks ago and the caring folks at Amplitude have not yet gotten back to you. It's OK boasting about selling 1 million Endless games, but how many of them work?

Did you find your own solution or have you given up?

Actually, I've had quite a number of games that are unhappy with multi-monitor setups (or switches, for that matter). It's annoying, but I don't know that Amplitude should be singled out for this issue... smiley: smile

Copernicus - I'm not especially singling-out Amplitude, though I have no issues with any other games using my own dual monitor set-up. If I did have issues with other games, I'd single-out their developers too smiley: smile . Plus there seem to be be quite a few references to this issue on this and other fora, so I'd suggest something should be done about it. I don't think the number of users with multiple monitors is going to decrease, so if that really is the issue (no proof), then it's not going to go away.

I've noticed on this forum that the Amplitude folks have solved quite a lot of issues, and have even graciously apologised when they haven't answered a post for a few days. I'm slightly surprised that Daevin's post has gone unacknowledged for two weeks.

If you've had issues yourself with a number of games that don't like multi-monitor set-ups, please may I ask how you have resolved these issues? Does switching back to one monitor before starting the games work for you, or do you just have a number of games that won't work smiley: smile !

I have to admit, as the number of computers in my house has increased, the number of multi-monitor setups has dropped to 0. (I suppose it's less-than-zero, as I'm running one headless right now...) So it's been some years since I had a multi-monitor setup. Maybe the gaming situation has gotten better since then; but I do recall having to set up the OS to only use one monitor in order to run a couple of high-end games...

Hi,

I have the solution with Nvidia cards ;

- Go to Nvidia Control Panel

- Manage 3D Settings

- add ENDLESS LEGEND to customize program list

- now search for line "MultiDisplay/Mixed GPU"

- switch option to SINGLE DISPLAY

- do not forget to Apply

- play the game smiley: wink

Now for Radeon, maybe you should have similar options !

Hope it help U

Nathan0322: could you make your own post and describe exactly what other steps you have tried and what their results were? Also be sure to include your complete pc specs (a dxdiag would be handy): http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/run-directx-diagnostic-tool
