I'm new on the EL side of the forums, and honestly its been ages since I was around on here from when I first picked up Endless Space.

As I've found myself interested in grabbing Endless Legend during Steam's Winter sales I became curious after looking up the various interesting factions present. I have a certain draw to the Vaulters but I'm a more melee infantry oriented type of player. I was wondering if there had been any modding done or otherwise any other way to bring in a bit more melee infantry to the Vaulter's unit lineup outside of the higher tier Titan unit.

short answer... depends upon what you mean by melee.

They also have Dawn Officers which are cavalry thanks to the use of exoskeletons rather then beasts/vehicles. no swords in the default game but they do get axes...

Personally I use armies composed mostly of Marines and Dawn Officers, I've never used the Titans as they are just too damn slow and pointless to me. I did add eyeless ones to the mix when available... just too damn good.

I personally use Dawn Officers as "tanks" with axes and shields, high armor/hp gear, while my marines do most of the damage. They look weak at first but you can utilize them for a variety of roles with proper items.

Thats about what I figured, I spent time throughout the day looking into the game a bit more. Out of the factions The Vaulters have the coolest look to me as far as factions go that I'd play, but im big on my swords and melee infantry. To bad we cant give them other melee weapons. till seems like it'd be a shame to pass the game up on account of that.

The vaulters are space vikings. SPACE. VIKINGS! It's only logical they mostly use axes :P

On a more serious note, if you are a huge sword/melee fan, take a look at my personal favorite, Broken Lords.

Well yea, they did give off that impression. But come on, ya know even vikings used swords as well smiley: smile tho u do make a mostly valid point, they just looked badass and likely the ones I wouldve loved to utilize lol.

The only other thing I was thinking was hoping to bring in a minor faction like the sisters of mercy, looked like their unit was a sword user.

Hmm, Broken Lords, I think they looked kinda interesting looking back. The Vaulters, Drakken and Broken Lords were likely the most interesting looking to me from a play as standpoint, i missed noticing their infantry unit on the page and only saw the ranged and cavalry units.

I'd advise Drakken for infantry.High health, equip spears for dmg. Also if u want u can check out my mod, that adds some weapons to infantry and Vaulters Officers.

Or you can just edit the UnitBodyDefinitions.xml file to modify weapon choices and abilities. Make a backup of that file, so you won't come back here crying.smiley: smile

Interesting, I will take a peak at your mod(skimming thru the log for it now). I always back up, and if not, the install took next to no time so thats hardly an issue lol.

Thanks for sharing that, I'll definitely give it a go. Likely be the first mod I experiment with on Endless Legend.

EDIT: I'm not sure if its just this game or not, but after loading a game as The Vaulters with your mod enabled Samanie, I cant seem to use my scroll wheel to zoom in/out. It'd be weird if the mod caused that tho so I'll fiddle around and check back in with an update.

^apparently it was a fullscreen glitch, ignore that.

I think I'll have to play a game with the Broken Lords, I'm a bit weird and I like my sword wielding infantry lol. I'm not not overly familiar with tweaking an xml file to try to give the Vaulter unit the changes.

I've fiddled with the UnitBodyDefinitions.xml a tiny bit just now.

It always kinda bugged me that in the Vaulter intro you see a Dawn Officer sheathing a sword and KNOW that the titanium swords would look so perfect with them, yet in the game you don't even have them swords as an option for them.

Well, I've found the line in the code for the DOs and just added a line for onehanded and two-handed swords and saved. After making a backup just in case ofc. XD

Jumped right back into a single player game and sure enough I could equip them with all manner of swords. Animations looked good as well when I tossed them into combat to see if the model maybe wasn't rigged for that weapon.

My, probably naive, conclusion on this all is that the weapon selection is possibly universal, if not *cough* endless *cough*, and the main reasons some weapons are only available to some units boils down to simple balancing.

I will probably fiddle around with it more since there were a few instances where I found myself wanting one or two possible options more that made sense in my head.

Though for now I will go to bed. Work calls soon. XD

Yea the Dawn Officer's actually look good with both the 1h and 2h sword models. I am however avoiding tweaking anything regarding the hero units tho. Judging by what I saw on the files thats a bit more involved then adding a line for whatever weapon type lol.
