First I had a battle initiate but never actually went into battle mode. Clicking on the notification would not take me into battle mode either. I could see the battle set up on the map, however the options to select positioning and continue was not there. Due to the fact I had an unresolved battle I could not end my turn either.

Possible related..

At this point I tried to save the game so that I could go back in and see if the problem fixed itself and I got an error after I hit save game.
