Hi!

I didn't want to have to do this, but I DO want to play at least 1 round of Endless Legend to the end!

BUG(s) SUMMARY:

- Out of Memory errors (and game crash)

- Happens on both Windows 7 (Native via boot camp) and OS X 10.9.5 (Native)

- Usually happens mid to late game. 90+ rounds on MAXIMUM map size.

- Out of memory on-screen dump happens when saving a game.

- Save game out of memory errors happen for both local and steam cloud saved games.

- Screen resolution or game resolution don't appear to have any effect on the crashes one way or another, but these crashes always happen mid-late game.

- Crashes steadily get worse as rounds play on, eventually resulting in a completely unplayable game.

I hope I can work with you guys to get these "Out of Memory" errors fixed, once and for all, because I am about ready to give up playing the game at this point, and that is terribly sad to me because it is my FAVORITE GAME in the last decade or so (WOW came out in 2004... 11 years ago.).

This is a consistent, and easy for me to replicate series of bugs and these errors happen EITHER on Windows 7, on Mac OS X 10.9.5. (It does NOT appear to be an operating system specific error - but ALL of it is related to being "out of memory").

The bug(s) always happens almost exactly the same way, and under the same circumstances, so basically all I have to do is pick the LARGEST map available in the game and play it 90+ turns.

That's it! Crash is guaranteed.

Bug, version 1: Game/Save crash, Somewhere around 90-100 turns, the game starts chugging and slowing down. At some point, when I try a "save game" operation (either saving locally or online, doesn't seem to matter which) the game crashes to a big red screen - see the attached file "endless legend error memory.rtf for one example dump of that error. From the time the memory error dump comes on screen, I am no longer able to save (at all) and I have to quit out of the game. That's one way the game crashes.

The game CAN be relaunched at this point, and played one or more rounds (if I am lucky), but then the crash WILL happen again in a few turns. I am able to save games in the mean time, but eventually that will fail as well.

Bug version 2: The other way the game crashes (also an "out of memory" bug), which seems to be related the first, is when zooming in and out too quickly, the game starts chugging, and then all of this "visual garbage" starts to fill the screen, and I'm NOT able to take a screen shot of it because it usually locks up the whole system at that point and I have to hard reset. It's like multiple copies of various visual game assets get blown up and then fill the screen like a kaleidoscope. I wish I could take a screenshot, but usually my whole system is hosed at that point. If the "video garbage" invades the screen, I may or may not be able to save the game. In most cases I have to hard reset the whole machine because I can't tab to another programs (spinning beach ball).

Trying to figure out what the problem is, I started to play the game in a window - the crash happens whether in or out of fullscreen, it doesn't matter what resolution I am playing at either. I tried to get around the error by lowering the screen resolution, mainly so I could monitor the load on my processors and RAM, and it DOES appear that when the game is crashing or about to crash, all of my processor cores are almost maxed, and the 32GB of system RAM is actually FULL, which leads me to believe this is a memory leak of some sort.

The fact that it happens either on Windows 7 or Mac OS 10.9.5 also leads me to believe that this is NOT and operating system issue, although it could be a hardware issue, or it would have to be 2 device drivers issues that just HAPPEN to have the same BUG between OS X and Windows 7. (Highly unlikely, but possible).

Because the errors happen on both operating systems and since both are "out of memory" errors (on each system), I am confident that this is game code gone wrong (or bad hardware design?), but just to be on the safe side, I have done the following:

1) I have reset the NVRAM/PRAM on my mac

2) I have reset the SMC on the Mac

3) I had run a full memory diagnostics test on both the system RAM and the VRAM on the mobile chip

4) I have done several reboots, no luck fixing the problem.

Here are my system specs:

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac14,2

Processor Name: Intel Core i7

Processor Speed: 3.5 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 4

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 8 MB

Memory: 32 GB

Boot ROM Version: IM142.0118.B00

SMC Version (system): 2.15f2

Serial Number (system): D25M20SHF8JC

Hardware UUID: 051662EE-18E1-5198-8424-12DC4F37DF4C

Video specs:

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB

I did update my Mac OS System files, per your instructions on Steam, to the latest version of Mono framework, which did appear to help with the stability of the game a bit, but definitely not enough to stop the crashes. (I am upgrading to version 4.0.0 of Mono Framework now because it's the only thing I can do ATM...)

There is one last, and interesting piece of info about this bug: a 32 bit application can theoretically only address 4 GB of system RAM, but when Endless Legend crashes, it is usually taking up 800% more RAM! I have 32GB of system ram and 4GB of VRAM and at least the system ram is FULL when the game finally crashes.

I've attached a zip with all of the requested information. Let me know if you need more or want me to do anything!

Or, you can text me when playing, just drop me a line and I'll give you my phone number.

I have a vested interest in getting this fixed and maybe if we can fix the memory leaks, we can solve some other problems people are having as well!

Thanks for your time and best regards,

- Louis

Crashed again last night, and I wasn't able to upload the zip file, so I'm trying again...

No dice! I'm going to try this again on firefox browser. Your upload system says that my file (zip) uploads, but I'm not able to manage it in the management screen. Ugh!"

It's bad enough that there is a game bug, now I have to troubleshoot a forum bug??

OK.

I'll see if I can get it to work in a different browser. The file is 2.4MB, which includes all the files you requested in the bug report.

Nope! I used Opera and the uploader looks like it is uploading and then it stops. No file is uploaded. Then I tried the basic uploader, and that says there is a file size limit of 964k or something like that, and the file I am trying to send is 2.4mb because it has all the files you have requested in the bug report sticky.

Is there a better way for me to file a bug than the forum? This isn't working.

Thanks!

OK, I TRIED to create a new thread, just to see if I can get around the file upload error, and it uses the SAME uploader as the previous thread, SOOOOOOO

Basically, I have NO way to get you the game files that you require to figure out this bug, and It's been over 24 hours and no one has even responded to this.

I don't know what to do. I can't finish the game because it keeps crashing and I have no way to help you guys fix it because of the problems on your forum.

I'll give you guys a few days to maybe send me an e-mail address to submit the bug files to (the zip is 2.4MB and you need ALL the files in that zip), but if I can't help you start fixing this issue, then I guess I'll have to go back to my steam account and modify my review of the game and tell people that it crashes in end game and maybe hold off buying the game until fixes have been implemented.

Id much rather play the game, but I haven't been able to finish a game yet!

Sorry to be the party pooper, but this issue has been going on for months.

Thanks!

3 weeks and still no reply to this post, huh?

I give up. I just changed my review of EL from thumbs up to thumbs down on Steam and decided to tell the Steam community why.

Endless Legend is one of the best 4x games ever made, and it's a pity that after playing 340+ hours on both operating systems I haven't been able to finish a single game. What's worse is that no one at Amplitude seems to care, or they would have at least shot me an e-mail address to send the bug and log files too because I can't post a 2.2mb zip file on this website.

Looks like I'm going to be playing Galactic Civilizations III for a while!

Thanks for the fun, Amplitude! At least you tried.

Hello lsc9x2,

I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience. smiley: frown

Thank you for all the details that you have provided in your report. Unfortunately, we haven't found anything specific to your issue in your report.

Could you please tell me if you're playing in 32 bits on your PC (the one with Windows 7)? Have you tried to launch the game in 64 bits?

Have you tried to play on a tiny map with 2 opponents? Have you finished this game? (If you play on huge map with a lot of players/AI, it might create the error that you have mentioned during the late game +300 turns).
