Hi guys,

I'm having a problem deciding where to found my third city. I'm playing as Wild Walkers.

I've narrowed it down to three spots, but feel free to suggest other alternatives.

"A" has a lot of forests, an anomaly and access to sea which will come in handy later (would be my only city with access to sea so far). "B" has much better research potential and still solid food and production. "C" while being restricted in terms of development has the best research yield of all three.

In terms of raw values of those placements "A" yields 13 food, 21 production, 2 research, "B" yields 10 food, 14 production, 9 research and 4 dust, while "C" yields 6 food, 4 production, 18 research and 7 dust.

Which one do you think is best and why?

Personally I like A, as I feel that food and production are the most important things to launch empires. I find that a public library can get you 'enough' science at the start, so I don't see a need to heavily prioritise it.

I like A as well. Wild Walkers bonus production coupled with Era II improvement for Industry from forests will work great. And having few ocean tiles can offset the lack of science due to Era III improvement that gives science from them.

On the other hand, B has a pre-placed district for later. It might help your city grow level 2 districts more easily down the road. It's also more defensible from enemy armies because of the cliffs.

Definitely A. C is a total NO go.

A and B have the same amount of 36 base FIDS. However what is important to note is that A is focussed on food and wood, which is exactly what you want as WW.

Both early and late game profit massively from food and wood. If it is a fast paced game, this bonus is doubled. Science only has an advantage midgame, that vanishes very quickly. As your heroes usually top off the tile-based fids advantage that you get from buildings on science during midgame. Districts will make up the majority of your science-based power. Districts are powered by food and wood.

I settle forest-based tiles over science based tiles even with races like the Vaulters, which profit from science and not food/wood at all. The advantage on food/wood is way too important to pass up on.

I would also ask if any give you a happiness bonus as that is always key in the early game (late game with luxuries it does not matter so much). I usually prioritize happiness anomalies.

I agree here. The +8 FIDS Anomalies always give approval, which can easily get your city to a happy state (+15% all FIDS). Therefore, you have to think the yields of A are potentially 14.95 food, 24.15 production, 2.3 research plus better use of lumber mill and trading docks later.

Considering you are the Wild Walkers and you focus on industry and expansion, A definitely because it gives you both the most production and food, as well as giving you access to forests and the sea for later tech and hero bonuses.

Thank you all for great answers! I did chose A and indeed it was a great choice. I actually managed to reach location of B with my districts by the late game.

It's interesting that food and production (which basically equals city development) is so much more important than research or gold. I've only learned that now in my third game with Wild Walkers. I've lost my previous game with Ardent Mages because I emphasized research too much.

Indeed, especially when it feels threatened. That's why it needs an escort I think.
