While this feature is requested every once in a while, it is unfortunately out of the scope for the game.

Which is ironic because LAN is usually the most stable way to play any multiplayer game.

So when's the last time you played a multiplayer game on a LAN?

I always figured this feature was used by people that wanted to bypass Steam. It's peer-to-peer so you'll get the benefits of the close network anyway.

I actually have a bunch of friends who, up until recently, still did LAN parties. It's just a bit annoying that so many devs have decided it isn't worth it to implement. I always thought (maybe incorrectly) that netcode for LAN games was much more forgiving than for internet multiplayer.

I don't live in the US, UK or Canada so my options for finding low-ping multiplayer servers online are limited as hell. That's one of the reasons I've slowly been moving away from multiplayer games that aren't turn-based or are action-based.

I used to go to LANparties a lot when I was young :) (we used to play Quake3, NFS, Counter Strike, StarCraft BroodWars ...)

Back on topic, I think that internet accessibility and speed have improved quite a lot since the 'ol days. EL also allows "private matches" too, right ? So is there really a question of need or convenience?

I'm not against it, but I honestly think that the game needs some improvements in other areas first ^^

Currently and unless our stance on the matter changes, this will not be possible either.

Well I never play 4x games in multiplayer in any case, so this doesn't really affect me specifically. It still sucks that it isn't an option for the people who would like to play on LAN though.

smiley: approval for complaining about the lack of a feature you'd never use...

...Maybe that's why pretty much nobody implements this feature anymore?

I don't really think that's the whole reason. In any case, I was more complaining that other genres of games where game length would make more sense to have a LAN feature also rarely get it these days.
