Is there any way other than research to increase your maximum army size?

custom faction can get +/-1 or +/-2 army size via traits.

that and research are the only ways (bigger army size is a huge advantage)

It's not quite the same as a bigger army size, but there are some hero skills that increase the number of reinforcements you can get per round, which is another way to get more units on the field at once.

IIRC both support and melee heroes can learn it, but support heroes can learn it earlier.

Hero buffs.

Positioning at start of battle?

No matter how many armies you have, you can only bring in 2 units per round as reinforcements. If you've got 3 armies of 4 units each, and they attack you with an army of 8 and a backup army of 2, then you have more units than them, but in the first round they get to attack you with 10 units and you only get to attack back with 6.

Also, as Caotico09 points out, you don't get to choose the starting positions of your reinforcements like you do with the units in the main army.

Also, you pay extra upkeep per army, so dividing the same units into more armies costs you more upkeep.

Infantry heroes have an ability that gives extra reinforcement flags...

Proliferator's foragers increase without any number limit the size of an army. Problem is the cost of your army : it can begin insane (as -100 per turn).

Say what?? Where can I see the formulae for this? I though army upkeep was just 1 per level per unit.

In your army management screen, it will show the total upkeep for each army, and holding the mouse over the upkeep will show how much of it is for the army slot versus the units.

I believe the upkeep per slot is 4 dust/turn at the start of the game and increases based on I'm-not-sure-what.

I'll have to dig in the files when I get home but I believe the formula is (for a single army):

Total Levels of Units + Maximum Army Size

So an army of 4 Level 1 units, when you have researched Meritocratic Promotion (which raises army size to 6) would be 10 smiley: dust per turn.

Page 40 of the game manual:

Each army has an upkeep cost consisting of a base cost and an additional cost for each unit. As the base cost is rather high, you are encouraged to regroup your units in bigger armies in order to avoid unacceptably high maintenance costs.

It doesn't specify the formula though, but you can probably find the breakdown in-game in the Army screen tooltip for upkeep.

Huh. So if you have 3 armies of 4 units each, then research Meritocratic Promotion to turn that into 2 armies of 6 units each, it doesn't actually reduce your upkeep. In fact Meritocratic Promotion can only increase your upkeep costs and never lower them.

That's not quite true. If you have 6 units split between 2 armies, then research Meritocratic Promotion and combine them, your upkeep costs will go down (from 8 dust for 2 armies of max size 4 to 6 dust for 1 army of max size 6).
