Some combat questions

Hello,

I have noticed some things during combat that I am curious about. I'm not sure if they are bugs, cases of me not understanding something or if they should be posted as possible suggestions for how things might be made better in combat. With that said I wasn't sure where to post this.

Also, for the nteenth time! I love your games, but the documentation is awful. Can you PLEEEAAASE  organize everything into a single document. I should not be forced to look through a manual, a wiki, multiple player guides, pinned forum posts, multiple forums(this one and the one on steam). This is ridiculous. I worked as a programmer for many years and I don't think I have ever seen a worse combination.

Manual Land Combat
1) Is there a way to examine a hex in combat and determine whether there is a terrain benefit or penalty when a unit occupies it? If the answer is no, then can I get a response from a developer as to why not? On the strategic map you can hover over a hex and get all kinds of detailed information. The tactical map seems like it would be a simpler display since all it would have to show are combat effects.

2) There are some types of terrain that I am fairly confident give a bonus to defense. The problem I have run into is that it appears to be inconsistent.

Example: Lets say a unit occupies a forest hex. I have looked at said units under the "status effects" section(I think, I don't have a battle to look at right now) and a defense bonus is displayed, sometimes.

My question hinges on the last word. I have not been able to figure out the rhyme or reasons behind this. Why is there only an effect sometimes? I could ask the same question about city hexes.

3) Elevation. Exactly what are the advantages/disadvantages of units at different elevations? Does this apply to ranged combat as well? Is there any modification for flying units?

Naval Combat
1) Very similar to #1 under manual combat, but in this case I would like to know about the effects of weather. I know there is information in one of the Tempest pinned posts, but similar to my earlier question, why can't I see those effects when I am playing by hovering over/clicking on a hex on the tactical combat map?

I am not a developer and I think you are making excellent points.

As a short term band aid I can offer you some info that hopefully helps.

Forest = +50% defense

Elevation = +30% attack

City = +3 morale

1 adjacent unit = +1 morale

1 enemy unit next to your ranged unit = -1 morale

1 morale = +15% attack and defense.

Flying units can attack from a cliff or up a cliff without retaliation from the enemy.

In the battle on the sea:

Fog is the only good weather, all other weather is bad for you.

Fog=+50% ranged defense

Lightning = 15% HP damage

Rain = -3 morale

Turbulence = -x% attack

Seaweed =  - x% defense

I think x=30.

First , I appreciate your response. I do not doubt the numbers you posted but.. I still have questions. In fact you helped me clarify some of them.

All the questions I asked above are still on the table. In addition I have some more:
I remember there was a talisman that increased your elevation bonus to +90% bonus at lvl 3. So would you get a 120% bonus if wearing it or 57%?
What about multi-level elevation differences? Do these add up?
What about defensive bonuses for elevation, i.e. if you are above your opponent is there a defensive bonus or a penalty for the attacker?
In regards to cities and forests, why do I sometimes see an icon for the bonus and sometimes not? As a matter of fact I would wager the icon is missing more often than it is there. What is happening? Is this a bug or are there other factors that determine whether a unit gets the bonus? If there are other factors can you let me know what they are?
And to clarify my question on flying units, does elevation effect their numbers?

There are much better talismans than the one you mention, so I don't use it and don't know how it behaves exactly. Still you can answer your own questions by equipping it and carefully watching your unit attack values.

Multi-level elevation does not matter, there is no defense bonus from elevation. I have no idea why the icon is only displayed intermittently for you. I don't carefully watch it in my battles to have an idea if your experience is universal or an isolated case.

The other thing that may be causing your inconsistent results is that the effects are calculated at the beginning of the combat turn and do not change during that turn.

For example if you start in a forest hex then move to a plane hex your unit will still have the bonus defense from the forest until the end of that turn.
