how to succeed in this game?

ok, i seem to be doing better now. though i messed up somewhat in some games and restarted some times.  hopeful don;t think i be doing that too much from messed up games.

I think that the AI can trigger quests (e.g. by visiting ruins) but will not actively try to complete them (e.g. deliver a specific unit, resource, etc.)


I also believe that the AI does not actively pursue their quest line. It automatically progresses at a specific pace (set by the game difficulty) but will not complete entirely.


If I'm wrong, I stand corrected ^^

I keep hearing this about AI not doing quests and autocomplete, and just curious what it means exactly.


I am pretty sure AI would search ruins and will trigger quests so that a yellow quest army pops up for example. 

I had a case where in a multiplayer game AI played instead of my friend for a turn and then when my friend rejoined he had some (non-faction) quests completed.

These two would kinda point out to AI doing quests.


As for the auto-complete, if AI is auto-completing its faction quest after a certain number of turns, why all AI quest progress graphs don't look the same?

Ruins don't deplete globally. Every faction can search the same ruin at least once. The AI does not, however, do quests except for the faction quest which it can never complete. It just gets the rewards for each stage up til the last.

All the non-Building Legendary Deeds have two versions, though sometimes one seems to appear more often than the other. For the -50% expansion disapproval deed, it's either 15 districts or 30 population in a city. I've never seen the AI go for either, but depending on your faction it may be quite hard for the player as well. (Both versions are quite possible for Necrophages though, especially 15 districts. Which is good considering their conquest-heavy playstyle)

good call on the era 5 legendary deed and the 2 normal techs -  -50% + - 25% + -25% = -100% expansion disapproval.  


now you can expand endlessly.


you just have to win that era 5 deed or it is lost forever.   "is it always be first to build 15 districts?"

yea i didn;t count all the disapproval minus upgrades but i recalled seeing them spread out across the eras.

yea on the districts , lv 2 show +5 to happiness  from the texts or is that typo and actually give you more?  and lv 1 is -15 happiness  .  unless i read the text info wrong.  if lv 2 only add 5 and lv 1 is -15 , seem you end up with more lv1s and the negative would be dominant right?

this games growing on my but i have some potential problems i wonder about.  


the biggest one is expansion disapproval. is there a way to keep expanding indefinitely to all reghions with unlimited ways to counter expansion unhappiness to getting 100% happiness?  or does expansion unhappiness always keep up with expansion and you can only offset with happiness means so much - city plan, happy buildings, etc?



i really like to expand indefinitely and take all land, collect all minor faction types and use their unique units and so on.  but is this doable without expansion unhappiness to ruin my game?

You can't raze a city until the turn after you own it 100% (once you own it 100% you can add Salt the earth to the production queue to raze it).


The Allayi gain control of cities twice as fast as the other races so they can raze cities in 1/2 the time.


I think on normal speed you gain control of cities at 8% per turn, so it takes 13 turns to take control of city so you can raze it on the 14th turn.  The Allayi take control of cities in 7 turns so they can raze it on the 8th turn.

Later in the game your empire plan can also grant a boost to empire wide happiness so you can budget your influence to take advantage of that as well.

Luxury resources can be a huge help. Controlled city growth. Cities built on unique tiles that boost approval.

oh yes, entirely so! There's a trait you can take in the faction creation screen that will reduce your expansion disapproval. Also, if you don't feel like giving up bonuses, you can focus on happiness generation buildings. Sewer system and markets are particularly good. Further down the line, there's additional technologies that will reduce expansion disapproval by a flat percentage as well. And lastly, you can build up your districts so that you start getting more lvl 2s. This is done by surrounding a particular district with 4 other districts. It'll generate a nice happiness bonus for you, as well as other things. 


Let's see here. There's also luxury resource boosters you can use. The cost for those is increased the more cities you have, but the more cities you have, the more likely it is you'll have more extractors. You can also just buy what you need from the market with dust. 


Ardent Mage heroes have a skill on the right side of their tree that grants a disapproval reduction too, and Drakken governors can generate a flat happiness bonus. 


So yeah, that's just off the top of my head. As you can see, there's TONS of options to keep you exploring, expanding, exploiting and exterminating.
