Just a few hundred turns into my first game and loving it..  one issue I am having is with army assignment.  I currently have one hero assigned to an army but he isn't in an army but he has the name of the army unit when selected. In the allayi race it says my hero is in a "wing" which I know not what that means. He is a solitary unit. This seems like a glitch but not sure how the game mechanics are intended.. My other hero has a unit assigned to him in an army however when I select the army no where on the screen can I see my hero selected, as I assume he should be in the bottom left of screen to the left of the units panel.  It only shows you the unit in the army. It just seems like there is a lot of unnecessary confusion with army assignment.  It seems to me your hero's should show up somewhere on the screen when you select your assigned army.  But mine doesn't.  It just shows the unit he was assigned to lead even though I'm selecting my hero unit on the world map. Very frustrating as you can't check any stats without going all the way into the academy editor...?

Also why am I magically allowed to teleport my hero unit from anywhere on the map to one of my cities after a battle by assigning it a new army?  Feels like cheating in terms of strategic placement of units.. Do you see how this army assignment business makes no sense?

I've been playing the Allayi, the hero that doesn't show up when selected is assigned with a skyfin who's listed as being assigned to a different army and also has the solitary label.  The skyfin is labeled as being in the 1st Yayo Wing.  What does this designation mean? Confusion reigns supreme.  Also how am I supposed to know how many armies and units in armies I am allowed to have.  Where is this info available in-game?.. my guess is it isn't.  The long and short of it is, is, I have been playing the game for many hours and still have absolutely no idea how to create armies.  This is a basic game functionality issue that every other similar 4x game has managed to organize without undue hidden mechanics at play.  Also, penalizing a player for 5 turns for trying to place a hero as unit leader seems like poor game design, especially when I can simply bring all the units into the same battle space to accomplish the same objective.  It just creates completely undue complication which adds nothing relevant to gameplay. I just walk all my units within 5 spaces of the enemy to be attacked and they are available.

What a great game but basic unit management is borked and taking the enjoyment out of the best part of the game, which for me is combat. Also if you are not allowed to move a unit because it is next to another unit in combat it would be nice if that "effect" showed up in the units effects panel.  Trying to move a unit during battle and not knowing if the game is glitched or if there is an undue hidden game mechanic at play again is not ideal.

Units can create armies as well as heroes, even if its just one unit.  This is clear as mud.  Then you can also combine units of separate armies into single stacks that function as an army.  You can even do this with the solitary skyfin unit.  You just won't be able to see your hero in that stack... because reasons.  But it will still have the exact same funtion as an army. Why do I need a phd to organize a stack of units? To add to this mess if you add a hero to a stack with another hero, the one hero simply ceases to exist.  It doesn't show up when the stack is selected and the hero won't show up if a battle is initiated.  Please somebody explain to me how this is all working as intended?

update: Now my game is unplayable due to stutter after turn 177 which kind makes the rest of my concerns about the game pointless.  GG and well played.  Was fun while it lasted?? Debating whether its worth it to start another game if if breaks halfway through..

Not sure I can answer all of your questions but each unit on the map becomes its own army if it is separate.

When the game starts, you can have a hero-lead army of 4 units max (a hero plus 4 of any non-hero units). There are techs you can research to increase this limit. The unit limit is shown when you select the hero army underneath the unit portraits as x/4 with x being the number of units you currently have and 4 being the max in the army.

In terms of assignment, yes it is instantaneous but there is a cooldown before you can do it again of several turns. So if you assign a hero to a city you will need to wait out the turns before you can assign them to an army. It also really isn't all that cheaty since city governing skills and military skills for leading an army do not help each other. You'll want to choose one or the other for your hero and stick to that to make the most use of them. A hero with all military skills won't do much good governing a city and vice versa.

In terms of your question on names like "1st red wing" or whatever, each separate unit or hero on the map gets designated a name automatically.  So if you split a unit off from an army and send it elsewhere it will get its own army name.

Also in combat, initiative and being attacked in melee determine if you can move. If your unit is low initiative and gets attacked in melee before they can move, that is basically it for the turn. If they have more initiative than the attacking unit then they move first and can attack.

Not sure what to tell you about your stutter. Maybe you made too big a map for your system specs or need to turn down some graphic options. I would need to know your system specs to offer any more advice.

Allayi is a cool race. I would recommend you play them, but not as the first as they have some weird mechanics. The Skyfin has a trait (Which you can see if you open up the editing screen for it) that is called "solitary". This trait means that you can NOT assign a hero or any other units to its army. The guardians from the "Guardians" DLC also share this same trait.

As for creating armies; If you have them in your city, you simply click (or hold shift+click to select multiple) on the armies in the bottom left of the city screen next to your millitia in that city (Who are grey and you can not create armies with). Then you simply press the "New army" button right below the units in the city, and they will now becoma an army in the middle of your city, which you can move.

As for merging armies; You simply need to walk them into the same tile (If you have enough space in your armies as indicated by the small x/4 or later x/6 or x/8 at the bottom of the screen when selcted).

Also, "Wing" is just a fancy millitary word. In this game, one unit is a "wing" even if alone, so no worries there! :)

Thanks very much for the replies guys.  The one question left unanswered is what is going on when i put one hero into another hero's unit stack?  It seems to disappear or unassign that hero.  Like I said above, when you stack different units, some of them seem to completely disappear from any available viewing panel which is quite confusing trying to play the game.

Oh, and while I think of it.. I was just in a battle and reading the enemy stats it said:marine movement 2 range 3..... but it just shot my unit from 6 tiles away?? Kind of ruins it for strategic deployment.  Where are the hidden values coming from?

There can be only one hero per army, so if you merge two small armies with heroes into one larger army only one hero will be assigned to the larger army. The other should be on your academy screen waiting for a new assignment.

A marine hitting you from a starting range of six sounds like there was a Vaulter hero with the range increase skill. That would allow the marine to move two, then shoot at range four.

In case he won't remain on map as "one-hero-army" (it shows a zero close to the hero, for zero units in army).
