If a piece of equipment says it requires 6 dust, does this mean literally you're charged 6 dust when building a unit that uses that equipment?

I ask because that seems like an incredibly small amount to charge. Even putting dust equipment in every slot seems IIRC to not add up to any more than a charge of 40 dust or so. Is that it? Or is there an added upkeep cost or something that I don't know about?

Well the idea behind dust equipment is that they can be mass produced, as opposed to strategic resources against which they don't stand a chance. That said, units with a full inventory of higher tier dust equipment will require quite a bit of dust.

Yes, these Dust costs are an up-front investment, and will immediately be deducted from your faction stockpile, just like strategic resources. As Knight said, they're the second tier of mass-production items and gear, a step up from the Iron stuff, yet also possessing their own intrinsic qualities as well as a better stat baseline.

Fun fact about Dust gear: The boots are almost always worth it for early adoptions and upgrade.
