Counter-Attack and minor factions

Hello.



I have been playing the game for a while and I can´t stand the counter-attack feature. I have lost many battles because my units couldnt move during the battle because they counterattacked. Is there some way to avoid this?. It is too frustrating to see how your units die and you cant do anything to stop it.



On the other hand, with all the expansions and DLC at least, I realized that the minor factions are too aggresive and they does not let you develop as they destroy cities and armies. Is it a new feature? Is because the difficulty?

You'll want to deal with the minor factions in your area, and the area you intend to expand. Whether through quest or conquest depends on your overall game plan. Keeping a strong, military force is essential, regardless of your desired win condition, so you might need to invest more heavily in your early game military if you're having too much trouble. What difficulty are you playing?

I don't believe there's any way you can order your units to not counter, if that's what you mean. You can potentially influence the outcome by:



  • Equipping items that raise your initiative, so you can go first
  • Using units with the "free counter" capacity
  • Careful positioning (e.g. keep a unit out of range, or surround it with friendly units)

Yeah, initiative is basically a win-it-or-ignore-it stat. If you go the win-it route, you don't have to worry about getting locked by melee attacks. If you go the ignore-it route, it takes a little more thought, but with positioning and careful use of the hold stance, you can do just fine.

And if you are not keen on increasing initiative / avoiding getting hit by careful positioning, then playing a faction like the Arden Mages that excels on having its units get a hit and counter-attacking could be up your alley (that or stun, so you prevent your enemy from moving and attacking for 2 turns. Incredibly powerful).
