How does melee retaliation really work?

Even after reading several threads here and on Steam - and watching tactical combat play out - it's a mystery to me how exactly melee retaliation works. More precisely, is melee retaliation always immediate? (It appears so.) Does a unit that retaliates melee before completing its ordered action loses that ordered action? Conversely, can a unit that has completed its order action retaliate when attacked? Finally, can a unit retaliate more than once?

A summary of how everything related to melee retaliation works would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

Melee retaliation is immediate. A unit that retaliates before completing its orders loses its action point, yes, which prevents it from moving and attacking. That also means that any unit that expends an action point attacking loses the ability to retaliate.

And yes, some units like Bos or the Jotus among others, have free counter. It allows them to retaliate twice (or attack and then retaliate).

Something to keep in mind, a point blank range attack does NOT trigger retaliation (but range units will retaliate point blank if attacked in melee). In addition, a flying unit attacking from a cliff (or under) does not trigger the retaliation of a melee unit, as the flyer is out of reach.
