So I started playing EL after a break, and I got this quest (presumably from the side faction quests DLC)

I recall there was once a possibility to do that (I was often exploring with hero at the start of the game)

The thing is it either seems to be gone, or I forgot how to separate a hero from an army.

In the academy, you can assign a hero as a separate army in a city. I do not remember if you could separate a hero from an army while it's on the move though.

Alright, that works (I didn't notice the option because it appears only while the hero is unassigned, and I didn't have one for obvious reasons).

Thanks for help.

Originally, the only way to create a hero-only army was to assign your hero to an existing army, and then move all of the regular units in the army into a city garrison.

I seem to recall (a long time ago) someone on the forum pointed out that this gave the de facto ability to create a hero-only army on any city with at least one unit in its garrison, by creating an army out of that unit, assigning the hero, and then returning the unit to the garrison on the same turn. They suggested that the UI should just give the ability to do this directly, for consistency and ease of use. Apparently Amplitude decided to do that.

I think it's fairly dumb that heroes are completely capable of walking around by themselves, but they aren't actually allowed to split from their army except at your city. But, AFAIK, there is still no way to split them.
