For instance, if my hero has an item or capacity that grants army initiative boost, then will giving my damage dealers in that army more gear that grants army initiative boost be wasted?

In that particular case, those things will stack.



In general, if two things have different names, they'll stack. If they have the same name, they won't. For example, if your hero has Army Initiative Boost 3, you'll get no benefit from equipping a glassteel insignia (which provides Army Initiative Boost 2).

Army Initiative Boost X and Improved Initiative X are different capacities, so they stack. Heroes only have Army Stat Boost X or Army Boost X.



Higher level overrides, you can equip Army Initiative Boost 3 on someone with Boost 2.
