I've never really understood the strategy of building up your city with districts.

When do you build a district, and why? If there's a resource you can get, sure, I understand that.

But other than that most of my cities have maybe two, maybe three districts (until much later in the game when I'm running out of things to build).

How many districts do you usually put in your city? Do you start building them in the first 50 turns? 100 turns?

Any comments on district strategy welcome.

I usually start sprawling districts once I have basic buildings done (Foundry, Library, Mint, Seed Storage, Geomics, Glory of empire, optionally right of way) and some Approval buffer. I usually aim for 3-tile triangle, Which gives me a stable approval from three level-2 districts and quite a lot of exploitation surface to work with. Also empowers my "+X per District level 2" buildings. It requires 10 Pop in city though, which might require time. Unless I play with Cellulose mutation nation, then It speeds up the sprawling immensely due to how Pop growth works.

If I go wide then I ignore districts for a long time.

Also, I think 2-3 districts aren't that efficient to stay at. 3 is the weakest spot to stop IMO, because one more district and they start levelling, finally breaking even the approval hits while giving more DSI (regular boroughs do not give Food or industry on Levelup).

Also, my Transmuter city and Industry/Influence city tend to be district monsters. Transmuter City usually gets Husbandry Farm to grab those delicious Dust tiles and later fuel the trade routes with its population, when +7 trade routes building is available.

It all depends on how you play. I for example have no idea how do you act with districts in multi.

Every fraction need to build districts

1. Many city improvements will be better if you have many disctricts.

2. Bonus influence from each district(1,3,5 per each) - fast accecc to high level empire plans

3. Empire plan: +2 science per district, +2 production per district

Some quests involve leveling up.

I usually build districts almost as soon as the population allows me to. Or very early, anyway ...

It's better to wait a bit until you can build enough boroughs to level them up for the approval boost. Unless there is an awesome anomaly you want to reach asap, of course.
