How exactly does Morale work?

I couldn't found a full accurate description. I know it raises the attack/defense of the unit based on how many friendly adjacent units it has. But there are some questions left...

  • Is there a maximum? (e.g. when its already raised with items)
  • Can every unit profit from morale? (ranged as well as melee)
  • When is it calculated? (start of turn or when the attack/defense happens)
  • Does negative morale from ranged units work the same way?

You get +15% Attack and Defense for each point of positive morale (-15% for negative morale). Morale bonuses are capped at +/-6 morale (for +/-90% Attack and Defense), but are not affected by other percentage bonuses. Thus, the value displayed in the unit card might not be the exact value used for the morale bonus calculation (e.g. Defense Bonus from forest is not affected by morale).

Yes, all units are affected by morale, and the negative morale of ranged units works the same (which makes "Point-Blank Power 1" only a "lose less" ability).

However, I am not sure when it is calculated and applied.

Morale is calculated at the beginning of each round. So, if a unit starts off with 3 morale because of 3 adjacent friendlies and attacks alone, it still benefits from 3 morale (so +45% attack and defence). At the beginning of the next round, if it is not adjacent to any friendlies, it goes back to 0 (unless it is equipped with glory or death).

Which means that "point blank power" is not simply a negation of negative morale all the time. A ranged unit starting off with positive morale and moving melee range will benefit from both positive morale AND point blank, until the next round. Which is why I typically use melee range archers as a coup de grace.

In addition, the Allayi benefit uniquely from morale (and are punished uniquely as well, in case of negative morale), which will make them interesting to play on a tactical level.

It is true that morale seems to update at the beginning of the round, and I'm fairly confident it does, but I am not certain. The stat display during combat is unfortunately not always reliable. For example, for a long time the chard bonus to attack was not displayed correctly, as the to-hit chances did not update to reflect the changed attack value. For that reason, I hesitate to give definite confirmation on that (and I would love to get some actual confirmation from the devs.)

Also, you are of course correct that Point-Blank Power 1 can be used by relying on the morale gained before the enemy gets close, but I find that it is better to warn new players not to overestimate its effect (at least at level 1), since many forget about the morale penalty when reading the tooltip of Point-Blank Power.

Thanks for the great answers guys! smiley: smile

I guess, unless someone proves it wrong, I will assume the update is performed at the beginning of the round.

I have a follow-up question for this.

Will multiple 'decrease morale' actions from infiltrations stack? And if enemy units have a morale bonus, will I be able to stack the negative morale further than 6, to outweigh the positive morale of the enemy units?

Where are the people posting here getting this information? I have been searching for answers as to what "morale" in EL does and have come up with contradictory information, most of it at least as old as this thread here. The wiki (https://endless-legend.fandom.com/wiki/Battles) is conspicuously lacking any entries for morale, and I cannot see any source material. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Thanks

I can't speak for Cat-o-Nine but many of us learned the Morale mechanic in game I suspect.  It can have huge effects on your battles, so read over his messages again and mine below and then see what still doesn't make sense.

His answer about the +-15% and max of +6 or -6 Morale is correct and he covered many of the important factors answering the OP.  The other important part is that units give each other +1 Morale for being adjacent (touching), so keeping your units tightly clustered or working in groups on the battlefield can make a difference.  Don't ever let archers get surrounded by units, they get -1 Morale for every enemy.

Morale will make or break many battles, as units that have great stats on paper will do terribly in battle (unable to land a hit, unable to avoid taking hits or full crits)

You can stack 3 different Morale actions from your own spies to reach the maximum drop of -6 on the enemy, or you and another faction can do the same morale drop level and it will stack.

I found this section that really delves into the unit calculation overall and just barely touches on Morale, but it's all related so maybe see if anything helps.

TL:DR You want more Morale than your enemy if possible and you can use Spies to hurt the enemies and battlefield tactics to boost your unit Morale.

thanks much, very helpful. This information contradicts some of the information I have found by looking at (equally old) threads on steam, and I also seem to have the difficulty of not being able to test empirically to my satisfaction in-game because the information on the unit mouseover is at least sometimes inaccurate (as cat-o-nine seemed to suggest). In any case, sounds good.

Except for "spies". I assume this is some feature of a DLC I do not own (I am guessing: Shadows).

Yes, that is from the Forgotten faction available in the Shadows DLC, they can do a lot of damage to Morale while hiding in your city as infiltrators.

Glad to help, feel free to clarify or ask further questions as you play =)
