Hello,

I just had parts of my population killed-off twice in the same city, in successive turns. I don't even know that the spy was in my city (or its likelihood percentage of being there), nor how to protect my cities...

Can anyone please help with the following?

1. How do you know when someone is spying in your city before the damage is done?

2. How can you kill off the spies?

3. How do you increase the security in your cities?

4. I am not sure I understand the Roundup mechanic completely; can someone explain this, too, please?

Thanks,

Marc

1. You could prevent it by doing round-ups every now and then, and/or by building stuff which increases your city's security rating, and/or keep your population happy.

2. By doing round-ups.

3. There are several buildings which need to be researched first. And keeping your population happy also should provide a bit better security. Also, there's a detection ability on heroes and watchtowers ...

4. You basically give up half of your city's production for a number of rounds, during which your city's security increases and there's a chance that any spy who's in the city ATM will be injured / disabled.

What he wrote seems pretty accurate. The other way to prevent spying is by use of closed borders against an enemy before they get a chance to wander within vision range of your city (this requires you to be very pro-active with scouting). If they are using stealth though, they can still possibly infiltrate your city. What other answer were you hoping for?

Hello,

Imagine having seven cities and having to use round up periodically. How would you know when to hit the round-up button? Every other turn? Every thirty turns? On all cities? Thus my first question.

Round-up to answer #2 is OK, but I also think (just learned) that there is a spy damage feature in your own spy list of actions; something like "damage the enemy spy by 50%".

For #3, it would be nice to know what buildings (or Techs) are being referred to.

Number 4 was answered.

Closed borders doesn't seem like an option since that would mean that you would close borders with everyone, as you have no idea from which faction the spies are initially coming from. Plus, Closed Borders defeats, IMHO a good portion of the game mechanic. This would be a drastic measure...but OK.

Just don't lose sight of the fact that the game isn't designed to let you 100% defend against spying. Espionage is a part of the game. There is a chance you can stop infiltration, but it is never going to be 100%. There is a chance you can stop a spy who has infiltrated your empire but it is never going to be 100%. Espionage also isn't so horrible that it can make you lose the game in one go. If you have an idea who is spying on you, wipe them out or return the favor. Just like spying in the Cold War, no one ever had a completely clean house. Don't expect to have one in EL if you play with the Shadows expansion.

The only way to stop spying is to ensure your opponents cannot get vision on your cities.

Espionage actions are always successful. Security only increases you odds you notice/wound or capture a spy.

There is an infiltration action that reveals all infiltrated spies from the infiltrated empire in your empire. Use that to flush them out, if you suspect an enemy empire from having several spies.

Funny thing happened last night. I got a notice that an espionage action had been done to reduce population of one of my cities. It was a city I had recently captured and I was playing the Alayi anyway so I salted it. smiley: biggrin

Yes, but even this is laborious. This is how it works in actuality:

1. You need to place one of your heroes in another Faction's city.

2. You then need to wait until your spy is at a level 4.

3. Each level up is five turns (I think it's non-linear, but let's use the initial 5 turns as the rate). This means it will take you 20 turns to be able to use this function!

4. Opps, you picked the wrong Faction - there were no spies from that faction.

6. Gotta try another Faction: Wait another 20 turns, and try the infiltration action again...and again...and again...until you find out what Faction(s) have a spy or spies running around in your empire.

See what I mean?

Using the espionage action to remove enemy spies can indeed be tricky if you only react to enemy infiltration. For it to be really useful, you have to be pro-active.

If there's a faction nearby you are not on great terms with, infiltrate them, and just leave the spy in the city. Perhaps perform a few low-level actions to gain seniority, but otherwise let them build up to level 5. That way, when you get a message about spy activity in your cities, you can immediately kick out all enemy spies.

It is not foolproof, and it is a noticeable investment of Dust, and may not even be necessary.

However, I want to note that I believe that it is "working as intended" that it's extremely difficult to keep spies out of your empire for good.

You can also use the previous levels of the action to hit one spy, if you think they only have one.

But yes, dealing with spies is a nuisance, as it should be.
