Ok, seeing this for the first time, I just wonder how the string is actually pulled? Is there a ridged interlocking mechanism with a crank? Do they lower the crossbow, taking it vertical, then push the string lever into lock position with their foot? Is there a hand pulley block involved, at all?

The more moving parts, the harder to build and to repair the weapon, but the higher firerates and the less taxation on the soldiers you could expect.

In battle, to have a more distinct view of the battle field, the visuals are changed to let you think easily. So it's only a "battle visual".
