How can an army heal 100% in one turn?

I think it has been 4-5 years since I played EL, and I am now playing my first game since then. I set the difficulty 1 level higher than standard. I notice from the game status that the Necrophage's score is twice as high as the next faction, so they are beating the pants off of everyone. During a winter turn, I see a Necrophage army pillaging one of my pacified minor villages. So I attacked the army - it immediately retreats and it loses 50% of its health. The next turn, I see that every unit in the army has somehow magically healed 100%! What the heck! Does anyone have an explanation of how they achieved a 50% per turn healing rate? I was enjoying the game until now.

There are tons of possibilities. Some seasonal effects (eclipse or winter) grand regeneration, Sisters of Mercy assimilation effect can amount to a lot of generation aswell. The Guardian unit "skoros" can heal armies every few turns. Under the right circumstances this is certainly doable.

I appreciate your comments but it still doesn't add up in my situation. Here are the units in the Necrophage army, their current/max health values and their Level:

Forager 3 85/170 (l3)

Justicere 3 68/136 (l2)

Battle Born 104/208 (l3)

Battle Born 104/208 (l3)

Justicere 3 77/154 (l3)

Necrodrone 4 116/232 (l3)

There is no Hero leading the army and the army is in my territory. I am in winter but I checked and there are no healing benefits listed in the Chapel of Auriga. Yes there are 2 Justicere units with Benediction 1, but that only allows them to heal 1 unit for 15% of the caster's damage value which turns out to be ~5 health for each. They don't have a Guardian unit in the army. Also the Necrophage faction gets the "Fast Epimorphosis" empire benefit giving them +5% healing. So the most a single unit can be healed should be 10% + 5 health for each of the two Justicere units correct? But somehow all units are healing 50%.

Well I see now how the Necrophages could have  pulled off the 50% healing rate - they have the "Leader of Leaders" Legendary Deed giving them +20% healing, and then since they have eliminated 3 other factions and are dominating the map they may have assimilated up to 6 Sisters of Mercy towns giving them another %30. on top of this their empire trait gives them another +5% and they get the +5% per turn healing.
