Does it vary from game to game, and faction to faction?

Can you alter it? Can you have a region/territory name but call your city something else?

I haven't seen this answered yet.

I believe that if you change the name of your city (which inherits the region's name) the name of the region is altered to the name you gave it. Never did it though.

I have changed a city name. It changes the name for all references in the game EXCEPT for the region name on the map when zoomed out. I'd actually prefer it to stay that way, but that's just because I think the region should have the potential to be a distinct thing from the city inside it. The name references for almost everything else seem to change (I don't think it did in QUEST text, but I'm not sure--I'll have to reload a game and check).

This is a bug, and I have been told it is already fixed. We have to check no quest text keeps the old name, though

This renaming thing could get confusing in multiplayer if a region changes hands a few times. Or will the first player to take over the region be the only one who gets the option to name it?

I know Civ allows you to change names as many times as you want in MP. Don't think it's a major issue really.

I don't think it's that big an issue. It's just a name. I'd think most players would memorize position, not name.

I actually find this entertaining. Players sometimes fight over a city just for the privilege of being able to rename it without any other mind toward its strategic value. WHAT they rename it is another story . . .

That would be amusing, especially if they are consistent within naming based on their culture. Another good reason for a prolonged English vs French war. smiley: smile
