Hi,

I'm relatively certain that I read somewhere that the AI is currently very bare-bones. That means it attacks you, and that is pretty much all it does for now. They haven't implemented much more than that.

But I could be incorrect, if anyone knows more, feel free to correct or comment.

Exactly, you could send as many Thanks to the enemy AI and they will always declare war on you regardless of your rating with them.

People rarely expect the AI in civ 5 to be actually trying to win the game, and often complain that it does stupid things that make no sense (Like becoming enemy's llater on in the game).

I would expect the EL AI to be the same, it's trying to win, not to roleplay.

That's why games need to build in things that create mutual benefit that encourage diplomatic relationships, both short term and long term.

For example, like with Civ5 trade routes (not dip), you can see what you gain/lose by making a deal with another nation/CS.

This game could implement bonuses for establishing trade routes and these bonuses increase slowly over time (say every 10-20 turns benefits go up 1-10%).

That could/should give the AI incentive to make peace/create alliances. Otherwise, peace is simply an impediment to "winning".

For that to work AI have to be more sophisticated than: I Hulk. I smash. You dead. ^^ And that will come with time.

Why doesn't diplomacy ever work?

Diplomacy isn't implemented at the moment.

To quote the early access: "A core AI that will simulate a bunch of leaders who probably skipped way too many courses to go brawling in their youth"

All they really know how to do is CHAAARGGE! (at least yesterday's patch makes them do it with full stacks)

The Diplomacy screen has been added into early access for war declaration and to test the exchange screen.

We'll update Peace options around the same time Trade Routes will be implemented.

Diplomacy AI favors war for now.

Our goal for the final version is to give "chances" for players to make Peace and create Alliances with AI factions.

Well... not with Necrophages though. They don't like dealing with paperwork.
