ok, so far all the games i've played i've ended up on an island alone. i can't seem to get trade routes with other races. i've researched to tech for it and have built the improvement to allow trade over water. when i go into the diplomacy screen it says the other races can trade with me.

This is a bit more complicated.

2. Trade on diplomacy screen is something completly different. Trade routes are established automatically whenever possible, trade via diplomacy screen is influency based quid pro quo.
