Can you improve a unit's equipment like you can for a Hero?

I've noticed that a Hero can get better weapons and armor when in a friendly region. But as far as I can see, I can't do the same for an existing unit. I've created New units with better equipment, and there's a Retrofit button, but no existing unit is affected by that. So how can an existing, higher-level unit get better equipment to improve its performance and survivability.

It seems silly to NOT give a veteran unit better gear so it can perform better, so I'm guessing that I'm just missing something.

You have to edit a unit in Army Builder rather than create an entirely new one. You can only retrofit units of the same name so edit one of your existing designs and you will be able to upgrade.

Thanks. I'll give that a try. (Hopefully I'll figure out where to do the editing.)

Okay, I edited the unit design. The AI redesignated the unit as same name, but with a 2 at the end. Then I tried to retrofit the existing unit, but it's not eligible for retrofit. I'm guessing that because the program attached that "2" to the name, it doesn't see that X and X2 are related.

If you want to retrofit you always have to use edit rather than new. What I do is use new to create my own named unit for each different type and then edit when I want to upgrade that design. If you always use new then you will never be able to retrofit.

I.E. If you have the unit 'marine' then use edit to upgrade. It then becomes 'marine 2'. You should then be able to retrofit 'marine' to 'marine 2'.

Also make sure you have enough dust and appropriate resources to retrofit.

Hope that helps

As I said, I _edited_ -- ie., used the "Edit" button -- and made my upgrade changes. As you said, the revised unit was designated Unittype2. That also deleted the original Unittype design model. But then when I brought up the Units list, I wasn't allowed to "Retrofit" that specific unit.

I'm wondering if what I need to do is create a New unit that is identical to Unittype2, but name it "Unittype" -- no #2 attached, which then has the same label as the existing unit before I can then Retrofit that original unit.

I've got LOTS of Dust and Strategic material, so that shouldn't be the problem. (Then again, given how expensive it is to upgrade a single Hero, maybe upgrading a couple hundred soldiers is a LOT more expensive. Like more than 100 Titanium or Glassteel more expensive.)

It should display the cost of the retrofit at the bottom of the army selection screen, so if it is higher or lower than what you have, you should be able to see it.

Im not sure whats causing the problem then. The only other thing I can think of is the units have to be within your own territory. Its not the number on the end that is causing you the problem. IE If you edit 'marine 2' it then becomes 'marine 3' and you should be able to retrofit 'marine' and 'marine 2' to 'marine 3'.

Bingo. My bad. When I opened my last Save, I was thinking that the army in question was still next to one of my cities. Once I started to actually play again I discovered it was actually out mapping the world.

Thanks for all of the guidance, all!
