i got realy frustrated the other day. it took me so far, that i uninstalled the game and i refuse to play it until i know what is going on. I am on a continent with some stupid necro beetle whatever things. We were allied through diplomatie but suddenly they broke it declared war and attacked my city.. AND THAT ALL IN ONE STUPID TURN. so i thought, yea whatever lets fight them (my millitary was far ahead all my troops were level 4+ and he had about 1 or 2 level 4) he came with about 5 beetles drones. I had 7 trees 2 of those heal spiders and 4 rangers. First thing i noticed, troops dont joint battlefield as i want them to. My healspiders were second in que. but they never joined the fight. first fight ended with a draw i lost 6 of my trees and he lost 2 stupid beetles. And that is the next thing i noticed. the stats of my trees is 1/4 higher in every stat. i outdamage them by 20 points (they had 62 i had 80 with palladian weapons) but they kept giving me over 100 damage per hit. and i dealt about 35??? That doesnt make any sence. The rest of the 3 beetles just tore apart my city. i had a level 8 hero and a level 7 hero fighting with the army and i still lost that fight. how is that even possible? dont tell me i am too stupid for the game. because you cant actually controll your units like you could in age of wonders 3. This fight system just broke the game for me if no one can prove me wrong. Sorry for my bad english, i am frustrated and its not my native language.
So you were fighting the Necros. Yeah they are dbags. Just a quick question though did you redo that turn? Some times you can get unlucky with the RNG if your stuff is that much higher, plus the disease from them can tear you to shreds as well. Now if you are using palladium them your units should strike first and hard.
I will have to make a lot of assumptions to try to paint a picture of what happened. So the spiders could have not spawned because you never moved a unit from the reinforcement line. (I didn't know that was a thing till this evening.) For the damage you were taking, were your units teamed up on while they were alone? That is a big deal as well. When units are near each other they get bonuses. If your units go off on their own and don't finish something in the first hit they can get torn apart easily. Also units can force other units to attack them and pretty much not let a unit do what you want them to. If you attack an enemy first they can't attack something they might have wanted to as long as you don't use a ranged unit. For the 100 vs 35 it really sounds like you had a group on the one that got hit. The moral in the game will increase a 'crit chance' and do that kind of damage.
Really I won't say your bad, it just seems that you might not know all of the mechanics. If you just started playing it your not going to be expected to either. I would say though try that turn again and see if you can retrofit some units and what not you might come out ahead.
The "miss/critical" hit is all about the "attack/defense" ratio of the particular unit and bonus/situation. (terrain, position, morale, friendly units close, heroes, gear, capacities, effects...)
You can have up to "20% critical / 80% normal / 0% half / 0% miss" if you manage to have a 1.5/1 ratio "your attack/his defense" by all sort of bonus/malus.
If you only have 1/1 ratio, it's much more random as you will have "10% critical / 50% normal / 30% half / 10% miss".
So, attributes and bonus of units are really importants to ensure damage and victory are not related to a lucky roll ^^
Same system applies when in defense. You can be sure of at least an half-miss if ratio is 0.5/1
