Hey everyone,
As we love to repeat, our games wouldn't be what they are without our community. We do mean that, and of course, we mean it literally: all of our games feature content that has been imagined, designed or otherwise created by our players! It seems only fair to us to now welcome some of these awesome people into the spotlight. Since this is a first for us, don't hesitate to leave feedback on this feature in the comments!
Make way for the first of our community members to join the freakshow: DevilDogFF, creator of the Unfallen!
Hey there, can you introduce yourself?
I'm Rob, Bobby, Bob, aka DevildogFF on just about every forum. I'm an American, living just outside Washington, D.C. I work in public safety in my real life job and I'm a full-time 4X superfan!
How long have you been part of the Endless community? Which of our games do you play?
Since the very beginning! I found Endless Space about five seconds after it went on Steam and I play all of your games! Easily among my favorite of all time! Most of my time has been devoted to Endless Legend and now Endless Space 2.
What’s the first Games2Gether contest you took part in?
I participated in the Endless Legend faction creation contest, coming up with the Haustoria, a race of parasitic plants (sense a theme here?). They were going to infect minors and provide cool bonuses to them, but The Cultists were a better idea and they won as a result. They're now my favorite race in Endless Legend.
How did you hear about the Faction creation contest for Endless Space 2?
I come to the forums daily. HOW COULD I NOT HEAR ABOUT IT? Seriously, though, I've made the Amplitude forums part of my daily internet routine. As soon as I saw it, I started brainstorming. I naturally came to the plants/trees idea because I have an obsession with flora being sentient and sea/ocean sentience. As a result, I'm pretty fascinated with Orcas/Killers Whales, too, hence my Reddit username (OrcasareDolphins)
What was the inspiration for your submission and what was the creation process?
I knew that I wanted to do something with flora, as I couldn't figure out a cool way to bring a water-based race to the stars. I was actually about to fall asleep with my son when the name, The Unfallen, came to me. I thought, "Hey, that's a really cool name. It would signify that they were still standing and definitely sounds cool!" and then I started fleshing them out. I took a lot of inspiration from The Saga of Seven Suns and its Verdani race. I always thought the idea of an almost hive-mind race of peaceful, but powerful, trees was super cool and I'm very excited about how well they turned out.
How do you think the dev team carried out your vision?
Perfectly. If anyone in the video game world was going to knock it out of the park, it was going to be you guys, Amplitude. Hell, they even made my vision better and more fleshed out. There's a bit of a rush during that process to get all of your ideas out as soon as possible, in order to get the most exposure, so my idea wasn't quite as fleshed out as I would have liked it. However, Amplitude took my idea and ran with it, making it much better - and way more fun - in the process. I'm just unbelievably humbled and excited to have The Unfallen in a game of this caliber and creativity.
What other cool things are you up to online? Any cool project you want to share?
I moderate the 4Xgaming subreddit and founded eXplorminate, but mostly I’m pretty absent from the scene lately.
Which recent game would you recommend? Which older game do you think people should give a try?
I am having a lot of fun with my Nintendo Switch! The Mario+Rabbids game is amazing, as is Steamworld Dig 2 and Golf Story. As for 4X games, I am also really enjoying Stars in Shadow along with Endless Space 2. As for the older game people should try: Ascendancy. One of the least known, yet best ever, old school 4X games of all time.
That's all for DevilDogFF! Now we turn to you folks, the rest of our community: what other questions do you have for him?
