Behind the scenes -- an inside look at The Sundering

Hey everyone,

Last week's comics focused on the Vaulters in the last moments of their flight from Auriga, and in particular a couple of lovers in a dangerous space-time. As we've done before, we thought you might be interested in learning more about the backstory and the production side.

Early sketch of the Zolyas, Ilona & Judit

An early challenge we had to face was managing to convey the kinship between the two female protagonists, Ilona & her daughter Judit. As Judit is a Sentinel, that is, a military commander, while her mother wears garments that are much more practical, we couldn't use clothing to underline the bond between the two. Therefore, we had to do with the faces. The first sketches of Ilona gave her a fairly weathered look, and while it stood to reason that the burdens of command had taken their toll on the Vaulters leader, it clashed quite a bit with the treatment given to Judit. The contrast between a more realistic and a simpler, almost anime-like style for Judit was problematic, so Yoon, our artist on this comic, removed a few wrinkles and gave Ilona a more angular face. Even then, with such a short format, we ended up reasserting their relationship on page 5, panel 4.

Something we had a lot more fun with was Dara's shop, a treasure trove of artefacts from all over Auriga. We wanted the room to have a warm, cozy feeling about it, hence the enormous bookcases covering the wall on the right, and the heavy drapes over the doorway. To underline Dara's origin as a Roving Clan merchant, we introduced a lot of nods, subtle and not-so-much, to other Aurigan cultures. Can you find them all?

That's it for today! We hope you enjoyed getting a little peek behind the scenes. Our next comic will be a long time in coming, but many of you have helped us with the direction the story should be taking.

Neat !

Also, will you reveal all the little references to endless legend in Dara's shop after a while ? because I'm dying to know how many are there...

So far I noticed 6 (not sure about some of them though) :

-The vinesnake in the "tube"

-The tube itself, which is depicted in a Cultists-only technology for era II as something to brainwash or convert if I recall correctly

-A Dorgeshi mask

-A delver mask ?

-I believe the little trinket, beneath the wall rack, on Judit's left is something that is given to the Broken lords, a tiara for the BL's main questline I think (or that one thing the cultists get during the main quest at chapter 2 or 3)

-the scepter/staff for the broken lords main quest (last chapter) on the drapes

that's all I could notice

Now do keep in mind that I've never played the Cultists but I think the tube contains vinesnakes (although they do seem to be smaller than usual). Maybe they contain "baby" vinesnakes.

I've just understood that the story resembles Aronofsky's Noah in many points.

Not OP, but I didn't play as the Cultists either...

Goodness the Cultists are hands down my favorite faction. I've always been impressed at how the community created factions are made to blend so seamlessly with already established lore.

Oh, they were a community-made faction? That is impressive! Definitely one of the most interesting factions, though in the end the Allayi were my favorite.

I find it surprising that people would own any 4x game and not eventually play with every faction, especially so for those made by Amplitude, full of diverse gameplay styles as they are.

I'm not seeing any delver masks, but the two upper ones on the display board are Dorgeshi, while the lowest three on the viewer's left are all easter eggs from our world. I can't identify any of the books and scrolls being unique to any faction, though presumably some of them are hero governor trinkets (which we should get in ES2!)

Wish that Judit will meet her mother one day.

Play as the Vaulters in ES2 and maybe you'll find out what happens to her ;)

The staff from the Ardent Mages quest-line is also hanging over the drapes.

Okay, next time we'll need to make this a LOT harder.

NEXT TIME ???

Second comic with a shop with endless things in it confirmed, probs a Lumeris comic (or featuring a Lumeris ?) since they are the merchants in ES 2, right ?

Or about Esseb Vathros, the archivist, he could've stored many things from all those endless temples he visits... So many possibilities...
