Awakening the Nakalim

The Nakalim are an ancient empire that first rose to prominence during the time of the Endless. Under the guidance of a Lost, Sobra, that protected their home system, they developed at a remarkable rate and their society flourished. They even expanded to other systems, integrating the species they encountered into their empire.

However, when the Endless harvested the Lost for their Dust, the Nakalim lost their patron deity. Without the guidance they had relied on for so long, their development stagnated. As their power waned and their empire began to crumble, they entered hibernation to await their return to glory as was foretold in an ancient prophecy.

Discovered and awakened by Isyander, the Academy has become a valuable ally in their return to power -- and their quest to resurrect their Lost god.

While they have lost most of their territory and infrastructure, the Nakalim retain much of the scientific knowledge from before their fall, so they begin the game with the first two sectors of each Research Quadrant fully researched.

However, having attained much of that knowledge through the patronage of their Lost protector and their faith in them, they are not particularly skilled researchers. Their population generates no Science output at all, and any system output from other sources is cut in half.

Relics of their former empire are scattered throughout the galaxy. The Nakalim can collect these relics and study them to recover some of their lost knowledge, boosting their science production. They can also assign them to their heroes or their empire for various bonuses.

Even after the death of their god, the Nakalim have not lost their faith. They have found an ally in Isyander and support his quest to revive the Lost. Thus, they can construct Temples to the Lost on their planets. As centers of worship, these planets will no longer contribute to their economy, but they will spread their influence. Any enemy system that falls under the influence of a temple can be peacefully converted to serve the Academy, which Isyander will reward with Relics and a tribute of Dust, Science, and Influence paid by the converted system.

Huh, very interesting, I knew you'd do something unique with them, but not to such extremes. Sounds good.

No Science at all? This will present a unique challenge for that scientific victory.

On twitch they said it is actually doable. If you go for the relics!

Each time a new faction is introduced, I'm filled with astonishment followed by bittersweetness. Each faction is so creatively and uniquely designed that I come to believe there is no more content for Endless Space 2.

And I was wrong. Again.

Wait, is this... Can we actually have a diplomacy with Academy now?!

Yes we can. It was announced in the last Dev-Blog: https://www.games2gether.com/amplitude-studios/endless-space-2/blogs/702-awakening-the-academy

The new faction sounds very interesting. I expected a bit more than just a science head start when they announced that the faction would have a stronger start than usual, but well enough. Let's see how it works ingame.

What we can take from the picture:

The Nakalim

- will start on a medium desert planet

- will have a leading religious party

- will produce a lot of dust (we don't know for sure what was built in the system, but 127 from 8 pop with a base modifier of 3 is still a lot - especially without Xenotourism and Intergalatic Supermarkets)

Both of the last points fit their background well, I suppose.

Will this change the useual acadamy story line?  I unfortunaly don't have much spare time so havent found out what the academy story line is I just know you make a choice later in the game if you follow it.

How does the Nakalim technology lead affect Sophon Omniscience? Will Sophons in a game with the Nakalim have to accept a worse science bonus on every tier 1 and 2 tech now?

Although I was hoping for something less humanoid I am completly happy with what I see. I totally love the space egyptaina sthetic and worshipping the lost sounds way cooler than what the Vodyani do ^^

Thank god you added the new academy System... It just gives so much more depth to everything I can't wait to play it.

I’m assuming the Sophoms will still get their better bonuses as the Nakalim didn’t research these technologies in-game. It’d be hard to believe that Amplitude would allow for such an indirect and damaging nerf w/o at least announcing it.

It already happens with technologies that other empires start with. Although I imagine that the Nakalim's tech will come from their faction ability and not a faction trait, so perhaps it will work differently.

I never thought about the poor sophons. I suppose they ll suffer a bit at game start maybe they can profit later from the slow research of the nakalim. Eager to try it out, good catch there.

Thus, for a fast game, they win thanks to the superiority of research on fast and powerful weapons and for a long-term game, they lose because of their accumulated delay in search turn after lap.
The tipping point could be around the 50th turn (high guess of my usual gaming experience)
