Additional design, this time some example of possible ship modules



Unfallen, on the whole face the same technological issues than other civilisations at least for material science. They had a long tradition of additive molding, due to their specialized growth techniques.

Specialized accumulators are embed into energy beads, very specilaized plant organs created after a while. The ernergy confinment inside does progress with Unfallen science but they are their main way of powering energy weapons.



Missiles are living organism, housed and dormant into shps spore clusters. The creatures are born and conditionned for their delicate task, fitted with bio synth captors and huge payload for their one time trip. The inprint of the enemi and the desirable target are added to them moments before liberation. An advanced delivery system evolved from spore ejector are used to free them into the void.

Fighter and bomber are more evolved and trained to perform their tasks, nonetheless, they are still expendable since no sapient Unfallen is manning (treeing ?) them.


Propulsion technology has been the pinnacle of Unfallen material science. They add to be able to grow and mold materials that weren't the kind they used to work with, compared to civilisation that explored mettalurgy from ancient ages. The propulsion flows are artfully modulated by flower like control surfaces, and the output is generated from the mysterious energy celles stored inside the Ancients. To an enginner from a traditionnal mechanized background, the whole systems lookds utterly delicated and eerie, since they often used evolutionnary paths to achieve the desired output. Both diagnosing and fixing issue with Unfallen technology is a task unfathomable to most.

Unfortunately I didn't have the time/motivation to further expand this lately. I'll try to cook up something for the incoming second stage of the vote. Since other contestants have provided architecture/heroes I could stide in that direction. I still want to explore how their industry works because I feel it's important to have them included in the scifi settings of the game, and have them use equivalent tech as other factions.

I guess the size of the "head" relative to the body just gave it that 4 head proportion (that of a two year old). So when I saw it, it instinctively registered to me as being small.

I guess its a matter of how you view things, since I have to work with numbers a lot and have a decent imagination, I naturally seen it this way to begin with. ^^

I never fully realized how huge these things were until I checked it for myself. Thought they were kind of cute at waist height. Though, the military does look much better at this scale.

Alas, I don't have much time to draw more at the moment. Would you have some special requests ?


Before the precise format of the challenge was unveilled, I imagined drawing 3 chars, an administrator, an admiral and an Adventure. (mmm peculiar all these "A") 

AS I envision it, the more leader/older Unfallen get quite large and static, so the administrator is towering being inside his/her command post, with several eye sets, exchanging with several people at once, and pondering... stuff to ask of others I guess ?

The admiral growth is stunted to fit a ship, He's got a bit of the warrior equipement, mostly decorative. The warfare is a bit ritualized as something existing but not really prevalent. When they need to represent it they use garnments/grafts reminiscing of traditionnal defensive culture : thorns for instance.

THe adventure is they youngest and more mobile, kinda like my civilian with more elaborate stuff grated on her : broad spectrum visors, defensive weapons, and all cool of bio synth geat and the occasional external technology.


Still not drawn them but when considering two aspects of Unfallen life : 

Industry : most of their tech is grown and made in additive manner. Huge extracting plants are used in rich areas to slowly extract the materials and condense it in fruit/roots that can be harvested. The most complex material are laid by animals or plants and carefully wowen. They do use some more traditionnal crafting techniques for the few elements that require them (as heating/drilling etc) but the bulk is created by their advanced modified flora. 


Unfallen have shed their sunlight diet since they have dominated agriculture. Originally their were parasitic plants feeding from others and their intelligence and mobility allowed them to rise further than simple parasitic vines. Now their food is essentially condensed plant matter and sugary drinks. Their dinner can take a longer time than animal ingestion, so they are often found with their "drinks" when idling or chatting or doing light work. Of course technically an unfallen can root itself if needed but they would require a long photosinthesis time to be active for a few moments a day. 


Subspeties : Unfallen features some variations akins to humans. The main difference between them and animals factions is how they don't have such a rigid body layout. Prehensile vines, air ingress, feeding roots and eyes vary in numbers and that's why most of the Unfallen gear is grown and tailored for an individual. Conversely they can tolerate levels of trauma, animals wouldn't be able to survive without technology.

I gave a little go at a station illustration, orbiting a gas giant. I'm not sure I wanna go on in this direction so I'm gonna leave the in progress picture, mostly because I realise I couldn't depict much of the scene inside.

Most Unfallen only keep vestigial foliage for esthetic reasons. Using their advanced bio grafting, they use artificial elements to enhance their limited vision audio amplifiers to communicate with other species. The older they are, the more sedentary they become until turning into almost still leaders.

Middle aged Unfallen, they compensate their lack of mobility with sharply defensive tactics. These behemoths wield both weapons and shields sized for vehicles. Their bio synth armor notwithstanding their specific physiology makes them very resilient. When entrenched and fighting for their kin they are a tough nut to crack.

Ships

The smallest and expendable crafts or missiles are not grown from Unfallen but related species modified for this usage. With their rudimentary intelligence, they provide and efficient and affordable squadrons, protecting the genuine Unfallen elders.

Elders destined to become ships are grafted unto synthetic skeletons then covered in space grade plating while they achieve the desired size in orbit. Bio Steel armor is then added to protect the main weapon systems while the tree itself house the power generation and other vital functions. Their regeneration feats are quite exaggerated, but they can quickly seal non lethal breachs. 

There is a limit to what is ethically achievable with only one elder. The largest Unfallen ships are made from several elders who share this burden. Each part of those massive ships communicate and work together while managing their own equipment. Unfallen are pacifists but not naïve : speak softly, and carry a big stick indeed

Ship's design reminds me Horatio units from first ES... I always play them because of their badass design.

I was happy that someone explored a concept with a "no legs and all torso" approach like you have. Your use of shading, colour and tone is superb and I wish I had the capability to produce artwork of this kind since shades or even simple cell shading can really bring out a drawing.


Especially when conveying actual colours. 


The military Unfallen is cool but the civilian you have drawn has really captivated me: with the contrast between the mask/accessories, with the main body and also with the foliage "hair".


In regards to the ships, I love the green pods and the generally twisty shape they have; I can also see you went with engines which is different from what I went with, so maybe I will SAIL towards victory - pun intended.


I felt like I had forgotten something and I know what it was now, a slightly shaded backing to the concept to bring out the lighter areas of each picture better.

Until the last moment, I would have hoped a Kawaï version with Japanese cherry tree in blossom... :'(


But it's still my favorite proposal. ;)
