Etymology

Based on the Tamil word "மறைந்த" (Maṟainta), meaning "hidden", "faded", "deceased" or "late".

I feel this name fits the new espionage faction very well. This is because the nuance of the word offers multiple interpretations and meanings. The word evolves from "மறை" (Maṟai), meaning "to hide" or "to conceal", as well as "to disappear", "to disguise" and "to suppress".

What is Espionage?

Espionage is the art of war applied to information. The traditional definition of "espionage" is the act of spying. However, spies are only one "offensive" part of espionage. The communication of information in a secured, cryptographic method also makes up a large part of the art, forming the "defensive" portion. This means that information is both a battlefield and a weapon.

Espionage is not just a military concern. In peace time, commercial competitors engage in corporate espionage every day. Information is a massive contributor to action and reaction in large organizations. Espionage is very often an institutional effort, and can mean the difference between a placated population and one in anarchy.

The best examples of historical espionage originate from World War 2, from the Enigma machine deployed by Axis forces to the spy that gave the Japanese the necessary intel to attack Pearl Harbor.  Military strength is secondary, and sometimes even negligable, because information is a weapon far greater than any gun, cannon or missile. The pen can more than just cut down a planet cracker - it can turn it against its master and lay waste to entire galaxies.

Who are the Marainta?

The Marainta embody this ideal in name and form: they are masterfully subtle, hiding what they don't want their enemies to see, controlling the flow of information so that they know exactly what everyone else knows. More importantly, they know how to make them forget, suppressing information so well, as they have remained forgotten until now.
