I can imagine them as feeling that as they are one of, if not the, oldest species in the universe that it is their duty to maintain universal balance by infiltrating all other sentient species and counter-balancing acts throughout.

Imagine an immensely vast network of spies and intelligence gathering all to maintain their sacred directive.
