hi, I'm playing the riftborn on slow and on a large map, game turn about 270. Last night the battle animations stopped sound only and had to turn off watching. Today i can't load the game it just hangs at 'Launching Game', left it for about 30 mins and then had to task manager it.

Regarding your sound issue, does that only occur for Battle cinematics or on prologue intros too?

I think the issue with animations stopping and watching battles is due to a known issue with Riftborn carriers you can probably avoid these problems by not watching battles involving a Riftborn carrier ship (other ships are fine though!)
