Error Loading Multiplayer Game Files

2. We have had several issues loading multiplayer game files. I play with one other person in the same room - the game will load seemingly fine on the host's computer but strange behavior happens on the other. During the loading screen, the error message `failed to connect errcode=0x0004/4` appears. When you click the checkmark in the corner, the game will seem to still load, but the gamer tag on the non-host's screen no longer shows up on the host's loading screen. Once the game is open, we have experienced several different situations: 

-The non-host shows up in the game as the host, so both players are controlling the same faction, fleets, etc. 

-The non-host shows up in the game as the right faction; however, seemingly random actions take place. A couple examples of this are colonizer ships being built without being queued, ships being placed back in the hangar, ships moving to places they were not directed to do so, truces being accepted, other random construction on systems... And there are probably more that I did not notice. 

-The non-host shows up in the game as the right faction; however, the technology tree is that of the host's faction. 


3. This has happened so far in two different games. One game, we played as the Riftborn and the Vodyani, and the second as the Cravers and Lumeris. We have tried resetting to previous turns, restarting computers, closing & restarting Steam. This has happened for two games in a row. I am not sure how easy this will be to reproduce. Please contact if I can assist, as we spend a lot of time playing ES2 and are very disappointed that we may not be able to play together.


4. It's hard to assign a number value since it has only been two games. I will add information and try to take any screenshots I can for future games. 


5. The game should be functioning as normal rather than spitting errors (I know this is obvious, but I want to try to follow the template! ;) )


6. We are both running version 1.2.23 S5 Gold - Public and have all of the same DLCs. I am on a Mac; he is on a PC. We have been playing together for several months and this appears to be a new issue.

Me and my friend have similar issue. It also sometimes causes guest to crash after this error. If he didn't, he is loaded into a separate local session. We noticed it never happens at the beggining of the game, but starts to appear progressively more often after loading turn 50+ to the point we can no longer load both into the game at turn 150+. We observe this behaviour for past 3+ monthes over at least 3 separate games we started from the beggining.

Maybe this issue isn't more common, because we play on biggest galaxy setting and have many systems colonized by the time issue appears.

Issue still persists. Is it even in priority list?

I have a strong impression that this affects manual saves only, made before ending the turn, because we never had issue loading from autosave.

I'll forward these files, but I can't make any promises for fixes.

Multiplayer issues like this strike me as quite tricky to reproduce, as multiple machines are involed. (But I am not a tech person, so don't hold me to that statement, please.)

Well, 128 turns into the game now and it's impossible for client to load from lobby simultaniously with host. Tried numerous times. Can only add that it affects autosaves too.

Hello, I'm new to the game and this forum, but I bought the game during the sale. Me and my friend played it and around turn 112, when we try to load the game, we get error  multiplayer error 004 and once we connect to the game, the AI controls our units and makes random decisions and truces. We've both tried hosting each other and even restarting our pc but still same. All other autosaves are the same too. We even tried downgrading version as well to 1.4.2. I don't know what else to do. Is there ever a fix for this?

Decrease galaxy size and let the guy with better PC host the game. That's how we avoid this from appearing.

So far we stopped at colossal (medium density). We haven't enoucntered any corruption, but haven't played past turn 200 (normal speed). If we will, we'll likely drop to huge and to 10 players from 12.

I was able to reproduce the errcode=0x0004/4 today.


Host: click new game

Client: try to join, get err

We also have strange save corruption for the past monthes. We begin and everything is fine, then at around turn 80 normal speed we have a desync. It's OK, we get back to the lobby to continue from autosave, but things aren't normal from now on. We begin to desync ever so often as couple of turns or even every turn, and the most amazing thing is that when save file to resync is loaded - it shows most of the slots are Sophons. We always have unique race setting, so can't have more then one of the same race for 10 players. Even if I started as Hissho, I may glitch to show I'm playing Sophon in lobby and have a Sophon loading screen, yet still load to Hissho. But at that point we already know save game corruption going on and it becomes progressively worse the longer we play.

That is exactly what I had and for us it blocked an invasion at one point locking everybody, did you have anything like that ?


Otherwise we managed to get through the error 004 => Impossible to create a game in with hugh galaxies so we created with a small, the synch worked, launched the game dumped it, re-created in hugh and it worked... until the race switched...

I only had disabled diplomacy (constant "in negotiations" state that didn't go away even after reload), that prevented me from declaring war on Horatio all while he peacefully converted my systems with influence. I guess a lot of our issues and curruption comes from a glitched AI.

This bug exists for 2 years now and nothing has happened. I usually play with a friend and after turn 60 or more we frequently get this problem. Could you please finally do something to fix it? We are unable to finish any game we play just because of this.


If you cant there would still be a workaround: The bug only occurs when loading a game together, it never happened to us when joining an already loaded game during a turn. But the problem with this is that the AI controls your empire for one turn, which ist enough to fuck it up completely. So could you at least program that the AI does not change a previously human player empire after loading for 1 turn?


Furthermore, when the error occurs and I just ignore it then I load normally into the game without any problems. BUT, I am not controlling my empire alone, the AI controls it parallely with me. I am sure you could do something about that, right?


Please fix it...
