With patch 1.5.8, are previous saves playable or not? Or is this a cloud saves problem?

I recently completed a game on the last publicly available build (1.5.5, I think). I didn't play at all with the recent beta patches.

Today, with patch 1.5.8 installed, I wanted to load the saves from my last played game to have a look at something, but when I tried the most recent autosaves or the manual save I made at the end of the game, it got stuck at "Game launched" then threw up a red screen saying "a serious error has occurred", before kicking me back to the main menu.

Interestingly, I also always make a save at the very start of every game I play, before any actions have been taken at all, and when I tried this file it loaded no problem.

In fact, so does a manual save I made in the middle of the game, many turns before the most recent autosaves. I'm wondering if perhaps the issue is that I have the "save to Steam cloud" option enabled, and when I made my most recent saves my computer had temporarily lost connection to the Internet without me realising.

What are other people's experiences of loading previous saves on version 1.5.8?

Here are the saves I have associated with the game I tried...

These two seem to work:

Sophons 7 (Start).sav

Sophons 7a.sav

These ones don't seem to work:

AutoSave 8898.sav

AutoSave 8899.sav

AutoSave 8900.sav

AutoSave 8901.sav

AutoSave 8902.sav

Sophons 7 (Defeat).sav

And here are my diagnostic files when I tried to load these games today:

Diagnostics - 2019'10'08 @1915'43''.html

Thank you for the saves. This incompatibility was not intended or expected (or we would ahve warned you in the patch notes). We're looking into the source of the problem, and your saves are very useful for that.

You can (still) switch to Endless Space 2 versions:

a) 1.4.21 or
b) 1.5.3

in betas tab. Worth a shot to play on your (old) save files.

-> right click on Endless Space 2 in Steam games list
-> properties
-> betas tab
-> choose version 1.4.21 - backup or 1.5.3 - backup

It should be noted that if you were playing on Patchpreview, 1.5.5 then you will not be able to play and if you were on patch preview 1.5.7 then staying on the preview will allow you to play the games as it does not download 1.5.8.

Hi. As I already mentioned in the discussion on Steam I have the same issue. Therefore I want to provide a save file from my current game. I checked it several times yesterday and it definitely doesn't work.

Nakalim02.sav

I guess that I would have more files which are not working anymore, but I only checked this one. If you need more I can check others an upload them as well.

Hey everybody!

We found a potential solution to the issue with the old saves, but it's still undergoing tests. In the meantime, we want to give you access to it through a beta branch:

  1. Open the properties of ES2 on Steam
  2. Go to the Betas Tab
  3. Select PatchPreview

This will put you on version 1.5.9, which should be able to load the problematic saves.

Thanks, I just tried the 1.5.9 beta and I can load my troublesome saves!

Normally, I personally prefer to not use betas when playing games, so I had a couple of quick questions:

Does playing a beta version of a game still properly track and unlock Steam achievements?

Once the patch goes to the public version, will there be any compatibility issues with save files made while playing the beta?

Anyway, I hope this 1.5.9 patch goes live for the public version of the game soon!

There shouldn't be compatibility issues between this and when it goes live unless we find other critical problems that need fixing. I believe the achievements still work, but I am not entirely sure on that.

There are no issues with saves after the beta goes live - confirmed.

I have not tested achievements while on beta yet but I have heard from various sources that achievements will still work on betas in Steam unless disabled by the developer so...still working, most likely.

Empire Chronicles (how the game tracks your victories) will not be recorded while on beta builds - confirmed.

This was the same for me for the longest time, but I eventually found a solution. There was a particular "End Game Summaries" file that was preventing all the others from loading. When I deleted that, my Empire Chronicles would then load.

Here's the thread where I went on and on about it. Hopefully it'll help you.

Just a heads up that due to how Steam manages cloud saves, users that use them will not be able to provide save files without first switching to previous beta channel on Steam.

Otherwise savegames will not even show up in a load list.

Nevermind, update rendered my save file unusable even on beta channel, Steam will not sync cloud with my machine even though it shows 12mb in use over cloud.
Now, I'd expect to lose my saved games if I were on beta channel before, but losing 3 days of game because of main channel update without a notifications does feel underwhelming.
