Several Images Appear Corrupted

I am on Mac OS version 11.4, running the latest version of the game that I know of. The game is still entirely playable, but several images are not appearing properly in the game, instead showing as static "noise". I do not know all of the files that are corrupted, but I will list the ones that I can remember.


The image when mousing over a "snow" type planet

The diplomacy image for the Z'Vali minor faction

The technology image for the "G-Goods Market"

The image when mousing over a Binary Star system

The image for the "Eternal Sunshine" event

The image when mousing over a Yotta-class Sophon carrier unit


In addition, when a new era is unlocked, the new features unlocked with the era are stacked on top of each other rather than side by side in a "block", so the ones on the bottom are off-screen and can't be moused over. Also, the animated graphic for the United Empire leader (Emperor Zelevas) appears as a black silhouette of its normal appearance in all instances.

I have this exact same issue.


Macbook pro (2016)
OSX Catalina 10.15.7

Graphics: 

Radeon Pro 450 2 GB

Intel HD Graphics 530 1536 MB


Game Build ID: 6749577


Installed through steam. Steam file verification reports no corruption


Both the UE hero portrait seems to have bugged lighting and also many images are broken.

Add - compat to the launch options for game in Steam (right mouse click on game in Steam library -> Properties).

I tried typing "-compat" in the "Launch Options" bar and this didn't work. Will I have to restart Steam, or reinstall the game, or restart my computer for this to work?

It's no big deal if it can't be fixed. Like I said, the game still works perfectly apart from the UI, and I can always just use my old computer to play the game with minimal hassle

Hey, I took a gander and I think I might know what happened. Seems like there is a 4GB asset limit that got hit with the new expansion textures. This results in some textures becoming noise. 


Dunno if there is still any dev support here with humankind in full swing but I'll post some links in case a dev sees them.

I took a cursory glance and I have pretty much no idea what any of this means, but I'll look into it. Thanks! I had a feeling it had something to do with Unity. My computer can't run Endless Legend at all for some reason, it'll try to start but then it will "Quit unexpectedly" because of something that someone else identified as a Unity problem.

I still cannot comprehend what any of this is or how to do it, but from what I've seen, this might not be an option for computers that run on Apple M1 chips. So I suppose, with Amplitude being focused on Humankind at the moment and likely done with Endless Space 2, this might never get fixed. See, I bought my Mac specifically so I wouldn't have to be a programmer to keep it in good working order, but maybe people were right when they said it's just not a great platform for video games. Thanks for at least trying to help though.

Ah, sorry for the confusion. This is a lead for the devs if they see it. I've done a bunch of unity development before so I know where to look. The short of it is that this looks like an issue on the export side when they made the most recent build.

If it's an issue of the file size being too big, could getting rid of a DLC or two help? For example, Awakening? Is there a way to completely delete and uninstall DLC, not just deactivate it?

My understanding is that the build includes all the DLC but the ones that are not purchased are simply disabled. These are core images so it's some random core asset bundle that is likely fucked.


Your best bet is a fully old build, somehow. I only just came back so I don't know how old these issues are.

I have the same issue. If any dev is reading this thread, please fix the otherwise working and beautiful game. Its one of the games which works fine with m1 macs too.

I'm having the same issue, the -compat launch option made no difference. The game is playable but a fix would be nice.

Hey guys, there is a solution - go to Steam > Properties > Beta > switch back to the older version 1.5.3 (i.e. version before Dark Matter) - the graphical issues will be solved.

Funny thing about that, I actually came back to this thread to report that doing just this did the trick. Now I can finally play my favorite game on a computer that doesn't take 10 minutes to start the game and hover on the edge of crashing the entire time. I didn't really enjoy the Dark Matter quests very much anyway. I can now officially vouch for this (admittedly a tradeoff) solution.
