How does the referral system work?

As the title says. I've sent the referral thing on the website to a few friends, they've clicked the "Watch now" button, but the number still says Pending for me. Is there a particular thing they're meant to do?

I know this doesn't do much but I like collecting pointless shiny stuff :P

Your friends have to subscribes to the newsletter as you do, to count in your "supporter badge" progress

Ah, I see. The "Pending" number also disappeared. I guess it's time-based then?

I referred a bunch of people, and I know several of them subscribed, but I never got credit for it.

Sorry for the bump, but I'd rather not make the same topic again. I got 2 of my friends to sign up yesterday, but today the number of pending and completed is back to zero. Do I have to get all 10 referrals at the same time?
