Are there any plans for full (native) Steam Controller support for ES2 at this point? And I mean 'full', not just official configuration

  • Your game uses the Steam Controller glyphs when showing in-game input prompts.
  • The Controller Configuration screen in Steam uses in-game actions that the player performs in your game, instead of keys or buttons.
  • You've published an Official configuration for the controller.
  • Your game doesn't restrict the user's ability to customize their controls. This means it allows any mix of mouse, keyboard, or gamepad input simultaneously.
  • When your game wants keyboard input (e.g. when naming avatars), you call ISteamUtils::ShowGamepadTextInput() to automatically bring up the text entry UI.
  • Your game has no launchers that require mouse or KB input - or even better, no launcher at all.

I'm not with Amplitude, but I'd have to ask: Why?

I mean, I use controllers for everything short of a strategy game (FPS, RPG, Racing, Platformer), and even I would wonder why they'd even consider it. They'd have to design the whole UI around it, which would invariably detract from the way the overwhelming majority of players control the game.

You are using gamepads, I'm talking about controller. The one that can behave or emulate as multiple devices at the same time, gamepad, mouse and keyboard included, thus lifting the burden of redesigning UI around it. Default UI will do. Though SC glyphs and custom ES2 icons for touch menus would be nice to have.

Though again, I have no experience with this myself.

You have Vive in the studio, but not SC? How come?

I personally use the steam controller for both ES and EL, and it's always felt natural and flowing for me. However, I would never expect Amplitude to compromise the integrity of ES2's strategy by simplifying UI features for the sake of Steam controller users. After all, the steam controller is designed to adjust to the needs of the game, not the other way around.
