Dear devs,

I and a couple of colleagues are planning to make a Japanese translation Mod for Endless Space 2, if I'm able to buy the game (Sega as a publisher prohibits a number of games such as total war series to be bought from Japan on steam for unknown reasons).

When creating the translation mod for the original Endless Space a couple of years ago, the unity engine did not support multi-byte characters, so we had to circumvent the issue by mapping the character set into a texture file, then render the texture to show up on screen.

So the question is, does Endless Space 2 support multi-byte characters? Or does the issue still remain?

Have you checked Endless Legend? That game got an unofficial Korean translation so it might also be using fancy characters.

I'm sure they've used the mentioned trick, otherwise chinese drama about EL wouldn't exist.

Downloaded the Alpha.

The asset structure seems to be the same as ES, so unfortunately multi-byte characters are unsupported at present.

Hope it changes by release.

Note Unity totally supports multi-byte/unicode

Unicode support

Unity has full unicode support. Unicode text allows you to display German, French, Danish or Japanese characters that are usually not supported in an ASCII character set. You can also enter a lot of different special purpose characters like arrow signs or the option key sign, if your font supports it.

Whether the GAME does is entirely different. The font system they use has to support unicode. There's nothing in unity that prohibits it. But that has nothing to do with Unity

I wouldn't hold my hopes up. I'm using a Korean nickname on steam and it became a running joke that I have no name in any of Amplitude's games. I once talked to the devs about adding extra characters to the game and while I got the impression that there is possibility about adding them, I highly doubt it's high on the priority list, assuming it's even on the list.
