Primary Gripe: Cinematic Battle Cam (Automatic)

There's something odd about the automatic camera during the cinematic battles.


Issue tends to manifest itself in one or more of the following per battle:


  • Mis-focus - the camera tends to point / look somewhere to the side of the ship being viewed, often leaving a large blank view of space while giving a bad view of the ship.
  • Engagement (angle and distance) - often the camera moves away from the fight, looking from a weird angle that shows neither ships nor fire well.
  • The sequence does not show most of the battle, instead focusing on close-ups of ships that doesn't show the actual engagement.

TL;DR: cinematic battles need to show more battle.

Bumping this up - This is still true now. Th egame needs better battle cameras.

Yeah, it's as if the auto-camera appears in predifned coordinates within the battle arena 3-D space, and depending upon which battle tactics were chosen, which defines different flotilla trajectories for each battle, the ships/flotillas cross the FOV of the camera in unpredictable ways.


So if this is true, then a different way to calculate where the autocamera appears needs to be perfomed based upon it showing up a set distance away from a ship/flotilla, focused on that flotilla, with perhaps the enemy flotilla behind the camera, or in the background, or wherever in order to achieve the desired cinematic appearance.


Something is definitely off.


And overhead view is great to see what's going on, but as soon as you zoom in to get a better look, the scanning overlay disappears.


And manually trying to control the camera in any meaningful way is pretty much impossible for me.


Therfore, I agree, a better autocamera is needed.

I was thinking about this (new player here)...they need a hotkey that "freezes" the current shot, either fixed focus or panning, if the player wants to keep it on that action.  Additionally, the player should be able to hotkey around to 3-6 different cameras that the auto camera uses.


Edit:  Also, has anyone else noticed that if you slow the action down 1/2 speed the battles seem way more "epic"?

Still true. It has a tendency to always favour small 'protector' ships on deployment. There should be an algorithm to have it favour larger ones.

I think that you can get much more out of the space battles this way too.


Unrelated, but I just LOVE the sound when the hyperium lazers whizz past the camera.
