Yes, if  other politic party gets more vote, another major law takes the place of the previus dominant party.

The issue I had, which may be a bug, is that when I had pacifists in my game gain some strength, but not take over in power....I still lost the law.

Unfortuantly not that useful. It takes so much time to do the reasearch that you are better off doing the Era 1 stuff becasue you need it anyway.

I could see its usefulness as a comeback mechanic, if you fall behind a bit technologically then you won't get the bonus research to tech in your era (since other players will have researched the useful tech there). With the bonus applied to next-era tech but not current-era, you could try going for a later tech to get an advantage that lets you catch up.

Yeah but that is a later usefulness, not an early game one.

It's a very situational bonus, for sure, but as it's a policy and not a faction trait I don't think that's a bad thing.

Um, It's pretty useful. The only planet I had near me that was useful on one play through was a Steppes planet. I put my hero as governor of my capital and the research took 5 turns... so on turn 5 I had a Steppes outpost.

Apparently every faction has a starting political law which gives a nice bonus and you can't end this law. Does anybody know if this is tied to the actual leading party? So what happens if the Sophons vote in a another political party, do they loose this law and the access to the next era tech?

Every law has a minimum required support for it to apply. Once you drop bellow that threshold, my guess is that it is no longer valid.

Can confirm. The militarist party got quite popular in one of my Mavros playthroughs, and I lost the law that let me research the next era tech.

You made a mistake there, I corrected it.

Thx for all the answers. That confirms that there is a major law bound to every political party.

(Sorry if this isn't the appropriate place to post this, and if my english isn't perfect)

When I start a new game with the sophons I can research Era II technologies. Is it a trait ? I can't find it mentionned anywhere.

It can be replaced, I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing playing as the Sophons and the Pacifist party came into power... which removed the Oracle of Science and instead gave me a law that made it cheaper to interact with Minor Races. It was pretty hilarious actually, since I had just assimilated the one minor faction I had found and stopped me from researching Steppe colonization  Next time I'll pay more attention to my population!

I think it's supposed to be that way. It isn't documented yet but in one live stream (the gamestar one I think) it was mentioned that the Sophons have access to Era II right away.

It is their initial policy that gives them this benefit.
