I just found out about it LOL

You just need to unlock warp drive (ERA I) and then by pressing shift+right click you can force off-lane travel!

Are you sure there is not another condition as well? Cause when I select a ship and I do a shift+right click nothing happens. Which faction are you playing?

Should be very amusing in multiplayer; definitely makes probes even more useful for minimising travel time.

Do you have the technoloy that allows movement outside star lanes?

Ah you are talking about going from one node to another without using a lane. Ok. You don't need shift+right click for that. Right click is enough. I thought you were talking about sending ships in the open without having a node at the other side. Complete blank exploration, which I found awesome by the way.

Hmm...it appears I was wrong.

Once you search warp drive, your ships automatically go off-lane if they can arrive at their destination sooner than using the lanes.

Sorry guys, false alarm.  I'll just find myself a rock and hide under it now...

It would be cool though if we could force off lane travel that way.

Yeah it would be an interesting feature. There could be some sort of risk involved like if you don't find a node after a certain amount of turns, your ship is lost cause it doesn't have the energy to come back or something, just like in skyrim when you spend too much time in the water you can drown.

I'm pretty confident that a hotkey to force off-lane travel from one node to another note will be implemented eventually, as well as Rally Points. They're a relatively low priority right now though, I imagine.

Not to worry.  All's well that ends well :-)
