I am unsure of what conditions need to be met to "purchase" the population upgrade for 750 essence, it stays grayed out. I have built an additional Ark ship, but nothing changed. Any tips?
Since it's non obvious, you can't upgrade your colonies until you get the era 2 nano robotics tech (or something like that, in the lower left quadrant of era 2).
its not obvious, dont worry guy, the vod have many, many good things, they will kick more ass the more you level them up, ...say a system with 3 planets? hells ya. like the previous poster said you need luxuries, if you dont have them, then take them(im sure there will be more diplomatic ways to get them later). belive it or not, I got broad science terms whole i was vod, i researched 3 teir3 tech befor my religion clamped down on that, but it was enough, good times

If I understand you correctly, you already spent essence to build an ark ship. This means you do not have enough essence left to get a pop upgrade and need to leech essence again until you meet the quota.
personally, i save that essence to build arks, rather than pop on systems(i definatly would if i had 4 or more planets avalible in a single system though, or a really good 3 planet systems(i mean colonizable planets)
