I don't know if anyone else has run into this, but I have a game that's at about Turn 50 where I generated a galaxy with medium sized Disk - 4 and set the number of constellations to few. I have pretty much revealed all of the space around my home constellation with probes, but I have not discovered a single star in another constellation. I know I set the game to "few constellations" but I think this might be a bit overboard
I think maybe the a few more constellations need to be generated with just a tad more constellations, and maybe tighten up the spacing a bit. It might also help if probes could uncover star lanes without first uncovering a star, but I could see how that might not fit in what you're trying to do with the exploration system.
I've noticed that the distance between constellations is usually quite far. I have yet to uncover a star from another constellation with probes (on types like ring, disk, etc.). I think its a design element to keep a feeling of mystery behind where the wormholes are and what could be on the other side, to keep exploration exciting for the mid to late game. Personally I like it quite a bit.
Have a look at this thread I wrote some time ago. the issues seems to be very long wormholes and distance between constellations. It is unreachable using "basic" probes, and actually being unable to free space travel if you can't see your destination, this forces you to either rush "improved" probes or wormholes in research if you want to get out of your constellation.
To be honest, IMO the actual system of free move makes sense, who will dare into space without knowing that will find something before starving? And should be changed. Switching wormholes and improved probes research position had been discussed in that thread, but I think that whatever you're doing the problem remains: too long distance between constellations.
Hope devs solve it before release, as I suspect this is not a core design problem, and can be solved only by number tweaking on galaxy generation. Something like a maximum possible distance between constellations, also possibility to configure it in galaxy generation settings.
